Spring Cleaning Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Spring Cleaning Giveaway Hop!

So I have some great ARC's to giveaway (and maybe a book or two). They've been taking up far too much room in my bookshelf. So here's the deal. I will have one easy entry. That's all.

I will try to list the books I have on here. Unfortunately I am out of town and forgot to write them all down. Oops! But I will just draw names until I am out of books. First winner will get first choice, etc. Sounds exciting!

I know this is a bit of a mystery, but hey, what's life without some mystery. They are all books I have read before, and they have all reviewed on this site. I'll post a full list when I get home in a couple days. I do know they include:

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
Hourglass by Myra McEntire
Secretly Smitten by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Denise Hunter, & Diann Hunt
The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin
Grave Consequences by Lisa T. Bergren (this is not an ARC but it has a ripped page...I can't exactly trade it, but it's a totally readable book)

I think I have more to add to that list...or that may be it...I'll update it when I get home.

This is for US only as shipping is a beast elsewhere. Thanks so much for stopping by and good luck!

Author Liz Gruder

As a youth, Liz Gruder saw a series of UFOs with her best friend while riding bikes. Ever since, she’s held a fascination for the stars. An avid reader, she used to hide under her covers and read with a flashlight. She has degrees in English and Psychology from Tulane University, a nursing license and a yoga certification. Starseed is her debut novel.

Excerpt:

Kaila’s mind split in panic. Help, she called telepathically. Help me!
She yanked her wrist, trying to free her hand, but Wade restrained her wrist like a manacle.
Instantly, Jordyn appeared by Kaila’s side. “What are you doing?” Jordyn shouted, as he quickly assessed Wade holding up Kaila’s four-fingered hand and everyone laughing. His hazel eyes turned to solid black.
“Oh my God,” someone said, seeing Jordyn’s eyes.
“Shut up!” Jordyn commanded. “All of you. Animals!”
Jordyn’s eyes went wider and blacker. Wade snarled as he pulled back his fist to swing. Before Wade could punch, Jordyn thrust his head forward, slamming an invisible force at Wade who went flying into the air, his back crashing against the wall.
As Wade crumpled to the floor, Jordyn leaned over him, saying, “May you have your worse nightmare.” Jordyn stared at Wade, commanding, “Look at me. Look at me!” Wade couldn’t look away from Jordyn’s entrancing eyes. A moment passed. Then Wade held his ears and screamed. Wade squeezed his eyelids shut, his face twisted in agony. His scream was so shrill, penetrating, and filled with terror that all the students backed away.
The students in the hall stared, unable to process what they’d just witnessed.
Mrs. Bourg pushed through the crowd. “Jordyn,” she said. “Suspend time. Now!” Jordyn’s eyes again went solid black. He peered intently at the students assembled in the hall. Each person froze like a statue. Jordyn didn’t put Kaila under the spell. One girl stood with her mouth open, her eyes wide with fear. Another guy had stopped with his hand over his mouth. Another held his foot in the air, stopped mid-run.
“I am concerned about you, Jordyn,” Mrs. Bourg said, arms akimbo. “Every day I see more emotion.” She motioned to the suspended students in the hall. “This is a terrible mistake. Do you understand?”
“Some of these humans piss me off.”
“I don’t care!” Mrs. Bourg shouted. “We are on their turf and are not to be discovered.” Mrs. Bourg wagged her finger at Jordyn. “You are becoming infected. You do as I say, you understand?”
Kaila held still so as not to draw attention to herself. She held her breath, her heart pounding like a jackhammer.
“Sure, I’ll listen,” Jordyn said. His eyes again transformed from hazel to solid black. As he stared at his mother, Mrs. Bourg’s face went limp. She froze, her finger stuck in the air. “And now,” he said. “You will listen to me. You are a human. You were a carrier of me as an embryo. But that is all. You are not my ruler, and we are sick of taking orders from you. You will have no memory of this. You will remember that you walked through this hall to the office and that is all.”
Jordyn put his hands on his hips on his silver overalls; he walked around the hall, surveying the frozen students. A girl’s eyes bulged, her mouth open, revealing her braces as she was paralyzed mid-scream. “And the rest of you,” Jordyn said, “will only remember that Kaila tripped. Wade caught her, and it was a moment that you will barely recall. It was nothing. In fact,” he added, “you all thought Kaila looked beautiful today and that she is one of the hottest girls in this school. You will tell her so.”

Aura Blog Tour

Tour Schedule

Welcome to the blog tour for Aura by Rebecca Lynn Talley! I have an excerpt to share from the book, but first check out some info about the book and author!

"I half-turned to her and shrugged, still processing what I'd seen, or at least what I thought I'd seen, in Ms. Neal's eyes—like they weren't hers. Obviously, they were her eyes, but it looked like she'd plucked them from someone else's head. A dead someone else's head."

In the fight between good and evil, Light is your only weapon.

Crystal Scott finally feels like a normal teenager. She has a lead in the high school play, a best friend, and a gorgeous boyfriend. With prom only a few days away, Crystal’s ordinary life seems perfect.

Endowed with great Light because of her virtuous choices and her inherent gifts, Crystal’s aura has become visible to those with the ability to see auras. Unfortunately, her power has also attracted the attention of demons intent on destroying all Light.

When Vincent Crandall, the human host for a powerful demon, discovers that Crystal’s Light is strong enough to disrupt the connection between demons and their hosts, he realizes she may be able to sever the connection altogether. Determined to stop her from interfering with his plans to rule the world, he sends operatives to neutralize her Light.

After the operatives fail to disable Crystal, Vincent decides he must harness her power for himself. He kidnaps her parents, and Crystal is thrust into battle against a demon army she didn’t even know existed. With the help of a mysterious young man and his mother, Crystal must learn to use the power within her before Vincent kills her parents and exploits her Light.

She has also authored numerous children's stories and articles for both print and online magazines.

When she isn’t writing, Rebecca loves to date her husband, play with her kids, swim in the ocean, and dance to disco music while she cleans the house. She has folded at least one million loads of laundry, baked hundreds of batches of chocolate chip cookies, and eaten 5,478 gallons of ice cream.

Excerpt:

“Looks like we’re right on schedule for the summit meeting with the other divisions.” Vincent smiled as he continued. “I’m sure you’ve heard that upper management is considering combining the southwestern and western divisions and I’m in line to head the merger. Of course, I plan to make the western division a strong competitor for our eastern comrades. The east coast currently out sells and out performs us, but I plan to change that.”
“Sir, we do have a problem,” Jack said. “In Colorado. Silver City.”
Vincent glared at Jack. He didn’t like being interrupted especially with news of a problem. Vincent was set to take over the western half of the United States, something he’d been working toward since he started with the organization right out of college. “What kind of problem?”
“There’s this . . .” His sentence trailed off.
“What, Jack? There’s this, what?” He emphasized the last word.
“Disturbance.”
He pursed his lips and then said, “What does that mean?”
Chris, a man in his early thirties with cropped black hair, cut in, “A very recent associate in Silver City has reported a disruption of control over the host.”
“Then take care of it.” Vincent had no time for this, not with the summit meeting looming. He ran his fingers through his thick hair attempting to settle his bubbling anger. His powers of persuasion were far more successful when he was calm.
Jack leaned forward, making his chair creak. “Apparently, a teenage girl there can interrupt the connection in our newer, and possibly weaker, associates.”
“Preposterous.” Vincent blew out a breath. Was he working with morons? A teenage girl? Absurd.
“If she has enough Light to sever the connection between our associates and their hosts—”
“Yes, yes, I know. You don’t have to explain it to me, Jack.” Losing associates, and thus control, in any city reflected poorly on the organization, and on him. Vincent couldn’t have that.
“What should we do?” Chris asked.
Vincent closed his eyes for a moment, considering his options. He drew a deep breath and gazed at Priscilla, head of associate training. “Neutralize the girl.”

Sounds exciting, yeah? Finally, here's an awesome giveaway that's going on with the blog tour.

Praise

"You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live the life of a normal teen, and we see her "otherness" pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an entertaining read. I highly recommend."
--Patricia B. Smith. Author “What the Animals Tell Me” and “Fifty Shades of Santa” (clean romance fiction)

"Liz Gruder’s characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine, Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader’s encouragement from the first page. Fans of Amanda Hocking will find themselves similarly transported into Gruder’s exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher dimensions, and, of course, high school." --Jadie Jones, young-adult fantasy author

Review: The Unlikely Gift of Treasure Blume by Lisa Rumsey Harris

Title:The Unlikely Gift of Treasure Blume
Author:Lisa Rumsey Harris
Publisher:Cedar Fort Books
Imprint:Sweetwater Books
Pub. Date:11/13/2012
ISBN:1462110266 (ISBN13: 9781462110261)
Pages:295

With her love of sweaters, goofy hair, and awkward manners—not to mention her family curse—Treasure Blume knows love is not in her future. That is, until she matches wits with Dennis Cameron, a divorced chef with a six-year-old daughter. Full of mischief, mayhem, and laugh-out-loud humor, this is an unlikely love story you’ll want to read over and over again!

(Summary and cover via Goodreads)
            **************************************************

Treasure Blume is a unique young lady. She does things her own way and enjoys it that way. One thing she doesn't enjoy is her family curse. Family lore shows that curses are passed down in different ways to the women in their family. Treasure's curse is that everyone hates her almost immediately. She is so off-putting that most people don't bother to get to know her. However kids seem immune to the curse, so Treasure is happy with her job as a teacher. Things start to change though with Treasure's new job. Life may never be the same for Treasure and everyone she meets as things begin to change for her.

This book was not at all what I was expecting. I thought I was getting a fairly typical love story, but instead I got a very interesting tale of a very strange young lady. I was afraid that Treasure's quirkiness might get a bit grating, but it never did. Treasure is just someone who lives life on her own terms and in her own way. I think some of the things she did were just a way to shield herself from the poor treatment she knew she would get from others. I particularly loved Treasure's grandma. She was a firecracker and someone I would always want on my team.

I really thought that the way Treasure's family "curse" was dealt with was really profound. So many times there are things in our lives that we see as curses, when in fact we can use them to our advantage. Treasure had to figure out how to make her curse work for her. In doing that, she was able to find people who could look past their initial reaction to her and see her for what she truly was. This becomes a turning point in Treasure's life. I thought that Treasure was a fun and interesting young lady. This book is a fun quick read that will just make you feel good about life.

Review: Off to Camp and Discovering Art by Ann T. Bugg

Title:Off to Camp and Discovering Art
Author:Ann T. Bugg
Publisher:Writers AMuse Me Publishing
Pub. Date:11/22/2012
ISBN:1927044464 (ISBN13: 9781927044469)
Pages:134

Valerie and Samantha are disappointed that their schedules were not allowing them to spend a week together this summer as they have every year since they were young. Fortunately, their parents are able to plan a weekend camping trip towards the end of summer. The girls are happy for the visit, but sad to think they can't go through the mirror on another adventure this year. They soon discover that the magic is not only within the mirror, but within themselves when they are together. Merlin the magician shows up to take them on their quest to help Arthur find his true identity and his place in Camelot.

(Summary and cover via Goodreads)
            **************************************************

Valerie and Samantha are back for a third time! Afraid they weren't going to get to spend a week together like always, they are pleased when they find out their parents have planned a joint family campout! Exciting as this is, Valerie and Samantha are sad they will likely miss out on their fairy tale adventure though the magic mirror. Fortunately, they won't miss out on fun though, because Merlin shows up and requests their assistance in helping a young man named Arthur find his destiny. Just the kind of thing Valerie and Samantha were hoping for.

Once again, this book manages to be cute and fun. The girls are growing up some, but they still manage to retain a fun sense of belief in the extraordinary. This book is a departure from the previous two some because instead of getting reworked fairy tales, we get a reworked Arthurian story. I love that these books are able to take stories that kids may be familiar (or not as familiar) with and show it in a new light. It breaths some freshness into old stories so well. Kids and adults will definitely enjoy these books!

Firefly Island Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Firefly Island by Lisa Wingate!

Sometimes love takes you on an adventure completely off the map.

Mallory Hale's life quickly veers off course when she falls hopelessly in love. After a whirlwind romance, Mallory finds herself leaving the bustle and action of Capitol Hill for the remote town of Moses Lake, Texas-with husband, stepson, and a U-Haul in tow.

A sweet, mishap-filled journey into marriage, motherhood, and ranch living ensues, and Mallory is filled with both the wonderment of love and the insecurities of change. But what she can't shake is the unease she feels around her husband's new boss, Jack West. Jack's presence-and his mysterious past-set her on edge, and when hints of a scandal emerge, Mallory finds herself seeking answers . . . and comes to realize that the middle-of-nowhere home she wasn't sure she wanted is the very place she'll risk everything to save.

Meet Lisa:

Lisa Wingate is a popular inspirational speaker, magazine columnist, and national bestselling author of several books, including Tending Roses,Talk of the TownBlue Moon Bay, and Larkspur Cove, which won the 2011 Carol Award for Women's Fiction. Lisa and her family live in central Texas.
Review:

Mallory Hale is making a life for herself in her way. Instead of resting on her dad's name and fame, Mallory is working her way up the ladder in Washington DC. Things change on a fateful day when she runs into a handsome stranger. Soon Mallory finds herself doing the unexpected- rushing to marry, becoming a step-mom, and packing it all up to move to a remote town in Texas. Her husband's new boss is a strange man with a mysterious past. When the boss's son comes to town, things get even stranger. Mallory will find herself on the adventure of a lifetime without even realizing.

This book took some interesting turns I didn't see. I was really unsure of where book was going really as the romance was very quick. The author does a really good job of making you feel Mallory. The loneliness of being in a new town combined with a small town where everyone knows each other can be particularly hard. Mallory is so different from everyone else in Moses Lake. You are able to really feel how alone she truly is in the beginning. I also like that Mallory's preconceived notions were really challenged. She clearly felt she was above all the people in town when in actuality she needed them more than anything. I particularly enjoyed Mallory's neighbor Al. She was a no-nonsense kind of girl with her own past. She was a fun character.

The book takes a long, languishing path to it's end. At times I almost felt it was on the verge of dragging some, but the author seemed to manage to avoid that for the most part. I also really loved all the quotes at the beginnings of the chapters. There were some great things written there that I really took to heart. At the heart of this book is the idea that God uses each of us in specific ways we may never quite understand. Each small thing can add up to one amazing thing. I loved that idea and the way it was presented in the book. The ending I both managed to guess and not see coming. Overall I enjoyed this book. It was a great slice of small town life and all the good and bad that goes with it.

Review: Into the Forest and Down the Tower by Ann T. Bugg

Title:Into the Forest and Down the Tower
Author:Ann T. Bugg
Publisher:Writers AMuse Me Publishing
Pub. Date:2/2012
ISBN:1927044243 (ISBN13: 9781927044247)
Pages:129

In the second book of Ann T Bugg's Before Happily Ever After Series, it’s time for Samantha’s summer visit again. Both she and Val are anxious to see if they will take another magical journey through the mirror. After learning of a problem with one of the horses, Odette makes her appearance and tells the girls it’s up to them to help.

What Charlie needs is something that can only be found in their magical land. It can’t be given to them; they have to solves riddles and discover the answers themselves. A family of elves guides them, but even elf powers are limited when it comes to what stands between the girls and what they seek.

Trolls and unicorns were everything they imagined and more, but rescuing Rapunzel from her tower was an added bonus they never saw coming.

(Summary and cover via Goodreads)
            **************************************************

In the second installment of this series, we again find Valerie and Samantha meeting up for a week of summer fun. Of course, now this fun happens to involve the magical mirror that takes the girls into a real work of fairy tails. This time the girls are tasked with helping a horse in the real world through the magical fairy world. The girls will once again meet familiar characters on the way to saving the day.

I always love this aspect of retelling some very familiar stories. This book sees our girls solving some riddles and trying to stay out of trouble, two things that Samantha and Valerie don't find particularly easy to do. It has all the fun of the first book, plus a little more to keep you intrigued. There are new characters both good and bad. We also get to see Samantha and Valerie grow some as they get a little older. It's always fun to revisit old characters in new adventures, so if you enjoyed the first book you will definitely love this one too.
