Excerpt

Blu Tara stared her sister in the face. ‘Let me tell you what you don't know about love, Gamma. It is a curse. You will scoop out your core and abandon it just to have the Being that you love. You will steal another person's life force if it makes it easier to get it. You will abandon the world you have been cradled in, betray everything and everyone you care for. You’ll give up your name for it.’

Blu Tara's voice went soft and dreamy. ‘You will gladly close your eyes and embrace the world of darkness. You will kill or die for it. And you will hate yourself for the weakness that it brings on you. So don’t talk to me about love.’

Gamma shook her head. ‘You're not making sense,’ Blu Tara. ‘You talk as if... I’m the one who should be upset about all this.’

Blu Tara lifted her hand dismissively. She pointed a hot finger at Gamma. ‘Anyway don’t forget what we are.’

'And what are we?’ Gamma glared at her..

'Different. Strange. Something to be frightened of. Two Beings that can fuse and burn everything to ashes. That's the way they all see us down there. That's what the Stardog wants from you - the powers you possess.

‘I hate them all. With their suspicious, shiny faces and their empty games. I hate that Voice which drones on and on at us in the Learning Dome as soon as we've finished resting. Innoverans! All those perfect, pretty Beings; they remember nothing — it’s the curse of this shallow, shining world. Tell me, Gamma - what do you remember of the world we come from before your Odors Apeno dumped us here?’

Gamma swung around to face her sister fully. ‘Blu Tara! What's got into you? Where’s all that coming from? I've never heard you speak like that before. This is about Krave and I- not you!’

Krave and you - don't make me laugh. And, oh! Here’s a big difference — between you and I this time, Twin Sister. It’s the answer to your question that you brought me up here to ask.’ Blu Tara mimicked Gamma's soft and musical voice, Why do you want to kill Krave?

Here's the answer, Gamma. I will do whatever I have to do to save myself. I'm the half of you that's not like you. I don't have a weeping heart. Now I'm out of here. I need my Rest.

Belonging to Heaven Blog Tour

Descended from the Hawaiian royal line, Jonathan Napela became one of the first—and most influential—converts to the Church in Hawaii. A man of intelligence, social status, and wealth, he used his considerable position to further the gospel in his native land. He developed a lifelong bond of brotherhood with Elder George Q. Cannon, helping to translate the Book of Mormon into Hawaiian and establish a gathering place for the Hawaiian saints in Laie, Oahu. But when his beloved wife, Kitty, was stricken with leprosy, Jonathan made the defining decision of his life. He would leave his life of privilege to become her caretaker and spend the rest of his life on Molokai, the island of lepers. To those who suffered similar heartbreak and banishment, Jonathan’s self-sacrifice became their lifeline. Based on true story, this is an extraordinary novel of a man who chose love in the face of death.

Author Gale Sears
Gale Sears is an award-winning author, known for her historical accuracy and intensive research. Gale received a BA in playwriting from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in theater arts from the University of Minnesota. She is the author of the bestselling The Silence of God and several other novels, including The Route, Christmas for a Dollar, Autumn Sky, Until the Dawn, and Upon the Mountains. She and her husband, George, are the parents of two children and reside in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Review:
George Q. Cannon didn't know what to expect when sent to the Sandwich Islands, he didn't know what to expect. He found himself on the island of Maui as a young leader over other missionaries. Through guidance and revelation he decides the best way to teach the people is to learn the Hawaiian language. This takes him around the island of Maui, where he meets Jonathan Hawaii Napela. They form a quick bond, and Jonathan Napela joins the church and does great things. They translate the Book of Mormon into Hawaiian, and soon Jonathan is leading the Mormon settlement in Laie, Oahu. Jonathan will face one of his biggest trials yet though, one that will force him to choose between the life and the people he loves most.

I used to live in Honolulu, so I was very excited to read his book. I was not let down. The author does a fabulous job of letting you into the world of George Q. Cannon and Jonathan Napela. I find the descriptions of how the early LDS missionaries traveled and taught fascinating. They had to ask for donations to live, and they worked very hard to survive. I would think this would distract from the work, but they managed to get a lot done. I had a passing knowledge of church history in Hawaii, but mostly on Oahu as that's where I lived. I've traveled to Laie many times, so I had fun reading about the sugar cane settlement there and all the work that went into gathering the LDS members on the North Shore.

I thought what this book did best was capture the spirit of the Hawaiian people. The respect shown to their heritage and beliefs was admirable. The Hawaiians have such a rich culture and history, and you get a good sense of that in this book. The sacrifice of the early Hawaiian Saints is echoed and represented by the huge sacrifice Jonathan Napela must eventually make. I greatly enjoyed this book. The historical aspects really came alive, and I could almost feel like I was back in Hawaii (although unlike George Q. Cannon I don't think I'll ever learn to like poi). If you are interested in church history or the Hawaiian people, definitely check out this book.

A Noble Groom Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for A Noble Groom by Jody Hedlund!

Michigan, 1880
Annalisa Werner's hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That'll be enough. A marriage for love...that's something she's given up on.

So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.

Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany and a former schoolteacher---or so he says. He's looking for work and will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.

With time running out, she accepts his help, but there's more to this man than he's admitting. He's also gentle, kind, charming---unlike any man she's ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

Review:

Annalisa has dreams, like every girl. She longs for a "fairy tale" marriage and love. Being a dutiful daughter, she married the man her father approved of. It was not what she wanted, but she has survived. Her husband has recently died though, and Annalisa hopes she can see a way out. Her father writes back to Germany to find a family member for her to marry, but instead a stranger comes. Just to help out. His name is Carl, and he's clearly not a farmer. However, Annalisa and Carl begin to work together and grow together. Just as Annalisa begins to think her dreams may be coming true, they all discover that Carl may have a secret. Annalisa must work to keep her farm and her dreams alive.

I found this book to be rather interesting. I liked the study of the pull between tradition and family and Annalisa's wants and needs. She really wanted a love story for herself, but she was willing to pass on this to please her family. She only begins to see that she can have happiness when it is basically thrown at her in the form of Carl. I also enjoyed watching Carl's transformation from spoiled nobleman to hard-working farmer. I think that Carl at the beginning of the books would have had a hard time doing the things that Carl at the end of the book did. I was kind of disappointed that the mystery of Annalisa's husband's death was wrapped up so neatly. I think there was an interesting dynamic there with consequences that would have been interesting to explore.

Annalisa had almost "modern" views on love, but I enjoyed that. It wouldn't have been near as interesting to read about otherwise. I didn't really get Annalisa's father's beef with Carl. That was all solved in the end though, so that was good. Overall I found this to be a fast read. I also really enjoyed all the real historical touches that were in this book. That helps to make the story more real and teaches me a bit about things that I didn't know about. Readers interested in a sweet love story with some real history behind it will find this book entertaining.

Helga: Out of the Hedgelands Book Blast

Welcome to the book blast for Helga: Out of the Hedgelands by Rick Johnson!

Twelve-year-old Helga has more danger in her life than most beasts her age—Wrackshee slavers after her, a vicious attack by bandits that nearly kills her, a race against dragons pursuing her, and leading a daring rebellion to save her life and rescue friends and family from the insidious WooZan. And that is just the beginning. But what do you expect when you are a young beast who just can’t see the stupid rules of the world making any sense? Helga can’t accept things as they are and ends up taking on not just one, but two all-powerful, supreme tyrants in two different realms. Helga never intended to lead a revolution. It just sort of happened because she wouldn’t go along with the “rules of normal” that keep tyrants in power and entire societies enslaved. Beginning on a dangerous quest to solve some mysteries in her own past, Helga leads her quirky comrades on a journey that will not only forever change them, but upset ancient civilizations.

As an author, I’m drawn to eccentric, unexpected characters: those who surprise because they hear a distant galaxy, see a different music, create their own fragrance rather than get hooked on a soundtrack; the child who has her own ideas about how the emperor is dressed; the lunatics and rebels who tell stories on the boundaries. Helga’s unusual story will take readers to worlds they never imagined—definitely a whole new ride. Time and again, the unconventional heroine and her eccentric comrades overcome ominous tyrants and black-hearted slavers, not by battling to the last beast standing, but by being the first beast to think differently. Helga: Out of Hedgelands is divided into three books which introduce the epic saga of the Wood Cow clan and their role in overturning centuries of slavery and tyranny. This story will continue in additional volumes of the Wood Cow Chronicles now in development. Over the series of current and future volumes, the entire history of the Wood Cow clan, the fall of Maev Astuté, and the coming of Lord Farseeker to the Outer Rings, will be told.

I am a native of the Great Plains, having grown up on a farm in the Platte River Valley of western Nebraska. I love the wild beauty of the Plains and nearby Rocky Mountains--the too hot, too cold, too empty, too full of life extremes. Typically, the awesomely diverse and the awesomely stark are much the same, even as they are different. Although I have lived in Michigan, North Carolina, and British Columbia, the western plains, mountains, and desert are in my heart. As my day job, for over thirty years I have been a faculty member and administrator in higher education. Teaching broadly in the liberal arts, including creative writing, my professional publications include educational materials, poems, and 28 stories for young readers. During my spare hours, I have also collected and carefully studied the records of former times upon which the Wood Cow Chronicles are based. It is my privilege to bring this astonishing saga to light. The Wood Cow Chronicles have been researched and written with the irreplaceable assistance of Barbara, my beloved wife of more than thirty-five years, and our children. Indeed, the essential research into the history of the Wood Cows has been conducted during the odd hours of family reading and storytelling "around the campfire" as we say--even when there is no campfire! This research continues and grows richer as our family expands across generations and continents.

The Breeders Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for The Breeders by Katie French!

Sixteen-year-old Riley Meemick is one of the world’s last free girls. When Riley was born, her mother escaped the Breeders, the group of doctors using cruel experiments to bolster the dwindling human race. Her parents do everything possible to keep her from their clutches– moving from one desolate farm after another to escape the Breeders’ long reach. The Breeders control everything- the local war lords, the remaining factories, the fuel. They have unchecked power in this lawless society. And they’re hunting Riley.

When the local Sheriff abducts the adult members of her family and hands her mother over to the Breeders, Riley and her eight-year-old brother, Ethan, hiding in a shelter, are left to starve. Then Clay arrives, the handsome gunslinger who seems determined to help to make up for past sins. The problem is Clay thinks Riley is a bender– a genderless mutation, neither male nor female. As Riley’s affection for Clay grows she wonders can she trust Clay with her secret and risk her freedom?

The three embark on a journey across the scarred remains of New Mexico– escaping the Riders who use human sacrifice to appease their Good Mother, various men scrambling for luck, and a deranged lone survivor of a plague. When Riley is shot and forced into the Breeder’s hospital, she learns the horrible fate of her mother—a fate she’ll share unless she can find a way out.

About The Breeders - Goodreads, Amazon, Lulu

About Katie French - website, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads

Katie French imagined herself an author when her poem caught the eye of her second grade teacher.

In middle school she spent her free time locked in her room, writing her first young adult novel. Though her social life suffered, her love for literature thrived. She studied English at Eastern Michigan University, where she veered from writing and earned an education degree. She spent nine years teaching high school English.

Currently she is a school counselor, doing a job that is both one of the hardest things she’s ever done and the most rewarding. In her free time she writes, reads great books and takes care of her two beautiful and crazy children. She is a contributor and co-creator of Underground Book Reviews, a website dedicated to erasing the boundaries between traditional and non-traditional publishing. She lives in Michigan with her husband and two children.

Review:

Riley has only known fear in her lifetime. In her harsh world, females are few and far between. This makes them highly sought after by a group of vicious people known as "The Breeders." The Breeders take women and enslave them in a hospital, forcing them to procreate as much as possible. It's the only way they see of furthering the human race. Riley desperately wants to avoid this, however this may be difficult. When Riley's step-father doesn't return from a trading trip to town, it's up to Riley to rescue him. The people in town think she's a "bender," a gender-less mutation. This manages to keep her out of the Breeders' eyes for now, but things become harder when Riley's mother and aunt are taken by the sheriff. Riley has to trust a mysterious (and handsome) young man named Clay to help her and her brother Ethan rescue her mom. Soon they find themselves on a journey with an outcome that none of them could have ever imagined.

There are a lot of great things in this book. Dystopians have been done a lot, but I was intrigued by the premise of this book. I was not let down. Honestly, I was so drawn in I read the book in one sitting. I meant to just read it bit by bit as I got other household chores done, but that all went down the drain. The pacing was pretty magnificent, and it keeps you wanting to turn the page and find out what happens next. Definitely finish all your necessary tasks before you start this book. I think I had never really had a good grasp of how important females are to the survival of our species before this. I mean, clearly I knew women have the children, but this book put it in a perspective I hadn't quite grasped before. Riley is a fierce and determined young lady, sometimes to a fault. I appreciated how much she wanted to save her family, but sometimes I just wanted to shake her and tell her to think things out more fully. I guess this made the book more exciting though.

Things were definitely left open in the end. As I flipped pages and saw my pages left quickly decrease, I was a little sad because I knew some things I wanted resolved wouldn't be. I will be eager to read the second book. This book does have a lot of violence, so if that thing bothers you be leery. However, it serves as an example of what lawlessness can do and the effect of ruthless people have on others. Although this book paints a rather dreary picture through most of it, you do see glimmers of hope. This book was really great, so if you like dystopians definitely check this one out.

Sprung Book Blast

Welcome to the book blast for Sprung by Kelbian Noel!

Since she discovered magic, seventeen-year-old Skye Jackson's life is almost perfect. Almost. Even perfect has its glitches.

What happens when the one with all the power makes the biggest mistakes? Welcome to my life.

Four months ago, I couldn’t have been happier. When my parents got divorced, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. Especially when Mom married a guy half her age. But then I found out I wasn’t the average Joana. Discovering magic existed and, best of all, I could use it, made everything easier to deal with. That is until I got a little too spell happy. But what girl wouldn't defend her best friend against a world-class creep? Now I’m stuck in a nightmare, forced to make life and death decisions I never dreamed I’d face.

Love the magic, hate the responsibility.

Book Trailer

Sprung is the sequel to Roots:

Seventeen-year-old Baltimore Land just wants to be normal, but magic has other plans.

I don’t consider myself a witch, that's my parents' thing. I've never really believed in magic either. Sure, I tried it a few times. Fell for the whole “magic happens” thing. But it didn’t happen to me. No amount of rhyming stopped my parents from moving me halfway across the country. Not one spell stopped me from being labeled the town freak.

And worst of all, no matter how many times I begged the Universe to bring my twin back, I was ignored. Until now.

He’s back all right. And in a magical bind of his own. Not the magic-won’t-work-for-me kind either. In fact, it’s working a little too well. Too dark. Too deep.

It turns out our entire family’s magical roots run just as deep and my brother didn’t end up where he is by accident. So I’m going to help him. But magic isn’t really on my side. Nope. Once I finally get the craft under control, I’m expected to abandon the one person in the world who’s closest to me, just to save myself

And as Cora stays one step ahead of it all, what might need the most protection is her own heart, torn between the dramatic pursuit of a dashing Frenchman and a man who has been quietly staking claim to her affections all along. Love has dangers all its own. She must escape the bonds of the past and discover the faith to make the right choices, as each one has grave consequences.

Meet Lisa:

Lisa T. Bergren is the award-winning author of over thirty-five books, with more than 2 million copies sold. A former publishing executive, Lisa now divides her time between writing, editing, parenting three children with her husband, Tim, and dreaming of her next trip to Italy. She lives in Colorado Springs.
Review:

In the sequel to Glamorous Illusions, we rejoin Cora Diehl Kensington on her grand tour of Europe with her newly discovered half-siblings. While things are going better for Cora with her family, things are only becoming more difficult in her romantic life. She's being aggressively pursued by a dashing Frenchman, Pierre. However, Cora's heart seems to be drifting toward their young tour leader Will. All the while Cora and company are still being chased by the people that kidnapped Cora and her sister in France. With new friends and some twists and turns, Cora must navigate Europe and her new social status. Cora's not sure though that she will be able to get everything she wants.

I found the first book very interesting, so I was excited to read the sequel. It was definitely a lot of fun. Cora's world is becoming increasing more difficult to navigate through, and you can't help but feel for her. She so wants to be able to live her life as she chooses, but this is looking less and less likely. Her newly discovered biological father has much bigger plans for her, and everyone around her is sure to tell her that Wallace Kensington always gets his way. While this doesn't sit well with Cora, she soon discovers there is a lot of truth in this. Cora is being pursued by the French Lord Pierre, but it doesn't take her long to realize her heart actually belongs to Will. Circumstances quickly change though, and it seems like Cora and Will will have a difficult road ahead if they want to be with each other.

Like any good middle book, this one leaves you with a lot more questions than answers. To be honest, I'm not sure how Cora is going to get any of the things she truly desires. That makes things more exciting though. This book manages to move the story along at a fairly good pace while really setting up the next book. I could have done with maybe a little less of the back and forth between Cora and Will on their feelings for each other, particularly when they had already confessed those feelings for each other. That didn't make a lot of sense to me. Overall though, that's a minor point. This book is able to make you feel like you are there in the time and the place exploring with Cora. I look forward to the next book. I really want to know how it all turns out.

Hunted Book Blast

Welcome to the book blast for Hunted by Ednah Walters!

Bran and Lil may have escaped an attempt to lure Lil to the dark side, and recovered the contracts damned people signed with Bran when he was a soul collector, but someone forgot to tell them that no one switches sides or cancels contracts without consequences.

Hunted by an unknown but powerful enemy, Lil, Bran and the Guardians must seek help from unlikely sources to avert total annihilation of the Guardians. When they finally face their enemy, one of them may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Author Ednah Walters

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries, hence Stratemeyer influence, before I graduated to Mills & Boons (starting with Janet Daily's Shutter the Sky) and the rest is history.

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and wondrous adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.

I've written picture books, contemporary and romantic suspense, biracial/multicultural books, and finally YA fantasy. Awakened is the first book in The Guardian Legacy series. I'm working on book 2, tentatively named Betrayed. When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children or my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in Utah, the setting for my series.
