Prejudice Meets Pride Book Blast

Welcome to the book blast for Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson!

Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson Book Cover

After years of pinching pennies and struggling to get through art school, Emma Makie’s hard work finally pays off with the offer of a dream job. But when tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to make a cross-country move to Colorado Springs to take temporary custody of her two nieces. She has no money, no job prospects, and no idea how to be a mother to two little girls, but she isn’t about to let that stop her. Nor is she about to accept the help of Kevin Grantham, her handsome new neighbor, who seems to think she’s incapable of doing anything on her own.

Fun, compelling, and romantic, Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. It’s about learning what it means to trust, figuring out how to give and to take, and realizing that not everyone gets to pick the person they fall in love with. Sometimes, love picks them.

The Idea of Him Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for The Idea of Him by Holly Peterson!

In the fabulous and intrigue-packed new novel from Holly Peterson, the New York Times bestselling author of THE MANNY, THE IDEA OF HIM explores the dangers of falling for the idea of a person, and why facing reality is more liberating than we ever dreamed it could be. For anyone who’s let the fear of being alone keep them from seeing who someone really is, THE IDEA OF HIM is an inspiring, action-packed story of what happens when we embrace our own power and allow the truth to finally set us free.
Allie Crawford has the life she always dreamed of—she’s number two at a high-profile P.R. firm; she has two kids she adores; and her husband is a blend of handsome and heroic. Wade is everything she thought a man was supposed to be—he’s running a successful newsmagazine and, best of all, he provides the stable yet exciting New York City life Allie believes she needs in order to feel secure and happy.
But when Allie finds Wade locked in their laundry room with a stunning blonde in snakeskin sandals, a scandal ensues that flips her life on its head. And when the woman wants to befriend Allie, an old flame calls, and a new guy gets a little too close for comfort, she starts to think her marriage is more of a facade than something real. Maybe she’s fallen in love not with Wade—but with the idea of him.
Captivating and seductive, told in the whip-smart voice of a woman who is working hard to keep her parenting and career on track, The Idea of Him is a novel of conspiracy, intrigue, and intense passion—and discovering your greatest strength through your deepest fears.

Holly Peterson is the author of the New York Timesand international best seller, The Manny. She was a Contributing Editor for Newsweek and editor-at-large for Tina Brown’s Talk magazine. She was also an Emmy Award–winning producer for ABC News for more than a decade, where she covered global politics. Her writing has been published in the New York Times, Newsweek, Talk, the Daily Beast, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other publications.
Review:
Allie is living a life most people only dream of. She has an important job at a high profile PR firm in New York City, is mother to two sweet children, and is married to a big-name magazine editor. Things begin to crumble around her though as she catches her husband sneaking off during a party and finds him in the laundry room with a young, beautiful blonde. The more questions Allie asks about her life, the more she discovers that maybe what she thought she wanted isn't really what she truly dreamed of. Allie must work to discover how to make her life truly her own and not just a reflection of what she thinks a good life should be.
I was kind of split on this book. I found the story to be super interesting. Allie is around my age and in a similar position (married with kids), but she is really discovering that maybe what she hasn't isn't actually what she wants to have. This was truly a story about self-discovery and independence. In the end that was one of the things that also bothered me about Allie. I wanted her so much to just make a hard decision and then stick to it. I felt for what she was going through, but even if she had made a choice that was "bad" in her mind, I'm not sure as a reader anyone would have blamed her. She still would have had my sympathy. This was kind of the point of the whole book, but it did grate on me a bit.
Other characters were delightful (and sometimes delightfully wicked). Tommy and his unorthodox screenwriting methods were very entertaining. My favorite person was probably the mysterious Jackie. As we slowly discovered who she was and what her place was in the story, I grew to respect her more and more. Sure, she had made some poor choices too, but she truly owned them for better or worse. That's someone I'd love to get to know. Overall, I did feel very drawn into the book from the start, and I did feel compelled to read it even if I didn't like Allie as much as I probably should have. I would recommend this book. It is not afraid to make Allie ask herself some really hard questions, and the answers definitely make one think about their own lives and circumstances. This was a very good read!

Life In the Palace Book Blast

Welcome to the book blast for Life In the Palace by Catherine Green!

Life in the Palace

After a lifetime in the shadow of her sister, Chloe is severely phobic of the chronically cool. Seth is everything she avoids; a pre-med philosophy major who works in a bar, plays in a band and is so good looking that grown women stare at him in the street. But it’s hard to say no to your soul mate. Thinking she’s maxed out her supply of destiny, Chloe settles down to enjoy the happily-ever-after.

Tal says that she’s one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance. Chloe assumes this is code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo.’ Actually Tal’s main extracurricular activity is fighting the forces of Oblivion. The People never need to hide what they are because no one ever believes them. Until Chloe does.   Chloe sets out to help Tal and The People as much as she can as an outsider. Seth says as long as no one wears their underpants on the outside Chloe can do what she likes. What he doesn’t say is that he’s also one of The People, although non-practicing. But as the Final Battle draws nearer, Chloe realizes it’s time for Seth to go collect his regulation sword. The only thing standing in his way is her. Seth says he’ll give up his place in heaven to stay with her. Chloe must choose between Seth’s soul and her own happiness.

The Fortune Cafe Blog Tour

Fortune Cafe Tour

Welcome to the blog tour fro The Fortune Cafe by Julie Wright, Melanie Jacobson, and Heather B. Moore!

  Fortune Cafe

MIS-FORTUNE: Emma, a waitress at The Fortune Café will do anything to avoid opening a fortune cookie. Each fortune is rumored to somehow magically come true. Being a girl grounded in reality, she doesn’t have time for that kind of nonsense. But when trying to prevent a food fight at the café, Emma accidently cracks open a fortune cookie: “Look around, love is trying to catch you.” If there is one thing that Harrison, her former best friend in high school is good at, it’s catching her unaware.

LOVE, NOT LUCK: Lucy has always been lucky . . . until her parents meet her fiancé’s parents at a disastrous lunch at The Fortune Café, and she breaks her lucky jade necklace. Even worse, her fortune cookie reveals that “True love is for the brave, not the lucky.” How is she supposed to read that? She’s always considered it lucky how she met her fiancé. But after breaking her necklace, Lucy’s luck takes a dive. And when her fiancé dumps her, the only person she can turn to is Carter, the unluckiest guy she knows.

TAKEOUT: Stella is content in her new life of taking over her mom’s jewelry shop. No more boyfriend to worry about, and as long as she stays busy, she doesn’t have to dwell on her non-existent love life. When Evan comes into the shop with his young daughter, Stella is charmed. But she is reluctant to complicate her straightforward life, so when she reads her fortune after ordering takeout from The Fortune Café, she completely ignores it. After all, how can a fortune as vague as “Do the thing you fear and love is certain,” apply to her?

Review:

Romance can be found almost anywhere, and these three stories based around one small cafe prove that. First off is Emma, a girl who is boldly making her way in the world of comics while waitressing at The  Fortune Cafe. When she serves an old high school friend, sparks fly. Emma just has to get past the issues in her life first. Next is Lucy, a girl who has lived a charmed life. Everything is going great until she and her future husband meet with their families. When her lucky jade necklace breaks, Lucy's luck starts to go downhill fast. With the help of her smart neighbor, Lucy has to get past a nasty break-up. Finally there's Stella. She dropped out of school to help take care of her ailing mother and run their jewelry shop. When a handsome stranger and his daughter drop into her life, Stella starts to believe that there may be such a thing as good fortune after all.

If you're looking for three quick, fun, and clean romances, look no further. Romance isn't always one of my favorite genres, but I was intrigued by the premise of these three stories. I was not let down. I particularly loved Emma and her outlook on life. She was taking what seemed like a "lazier" way to some, dropping out of college and working as a waitress and pursuing her passion in art and comics. The struggles she had with her mentally ill mother seemed all to real. What a hard situation. I was so happy when Harrison just wanted to help this girl who had helped him so many times.

One of the things that always bothers me about romance stories is that I feel like they throw in unneeded obstacles to keep our destined pair apart. I particularly enjoyed Emma's and Lucy's stories for seemingly avoiding that. Emma was able to talk through everything with Harrison, while Lucy's obstacle was more herself and her need to establish a life and routine for herself. I felt like Stella's was a little more stereotypical in that respect. Overall though these were fun reads. I read them very quickly and found myself not wanting to put the book down. They are perfect reads for relaxing and having a great time. You'll feel like you're among friends at The Fortune Cafe.
