Review:

Travel is sometimes inevitable, but it can feel like an impossible distance for children. This book takes a chance to teach children about the beauty of the world and how we can stay connected. With pictures and rhyme it helps children to know that no distance can keep love apart for very long.

I absolutely loved this book. I thought that the pictures were gorgeous, and really gave a good sense of travel and different parts of the world. They still managed to show connection and sameness as well though. It was very well thought out. I especially appreciated the message. Our family is very widespread, and my husband often has to travel for work. It's wonderful to have a sweet book to help show that our family is still family no matter where we are.

Liam Darcy, I Loathe You Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Liam Darcy, I Loathe You by Heidi Jo Doxey!

Lizzie, Nila, Alice, Cate, Vivian, and Fiona—six girls about to begin a writing assignment that changes everything. From cute crushes to dances and dresses, they’re recording it all, and so is their teacher. This modern makeover of Jane Austen’s beloved novels follows your favorite stories in a high school setting. Perfect for new fans and devoted Austenites alike!

About the author:

Heidi Jo Doxey has written five books in the Tiny Talks series. She graduated from BYU with a BA in English and a minor in editing. When she’s not writing or reading, she loves riding her bike, going for walks, spending time with family and friends, and being outside. She currently lives in Utah, where she works in publishing, but she still calls the San Francisco Bay Area home. Heidi blogs at girlwithalltheanswers.blogspot.com.

Review:

Life can be tough, especially at Pemberly Prep. Things start to change though as one English class starts a special writing assignment. By writing journal entries and letters, the girls began to mark all the major (and sometimes minor) things that happen in their lives. There are dances and dresses and boys to deal with among other things. For some girls there will be drama and for some there will be heartache, and all of it will get recorded in the written pages of these girls.

I loved the idea of a modern retelling of Jane Austen, and this book did not disappoint. I love throwing all the different characters and plots together. It made for some interesting takes on the stories that you wouldn't see otherwise. Also, I love love love the diversity! It was beautiful to see so many people represented in great ways. It made the whole school feel more real to me. I also like the way it was written as if by the girls. The author did a great job of giving each one a distinctive voice when telling their part of the story.

Most of the characters I knew right away, but I haven't read all the Austen novels so I was a bit off on a few. Just an excuse to go watch some movies and mini-series! This book was so fun to read. You wouldn't have to be familiar with Jane Austen to enjoy it, and it might possibly make you want to read the original tales to see the connections. It was a lot of fun to see so many familiar scenarios play themselves out in new and different ways. I thought this was a great book, and it would make for an awesome summer read.

The Boxford Stories Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for The Boxford Stories by Kristen Carson!

Boxford Stories

Welcome to the world of the Runyons and the Feldsteds, two Mormon families in 1970s Maryland. Far from their Western American roots, they cling to each other like exiles clutching a precious box of topsoil from the old country.

In The Boxford Stories you will meet Ada Runyon who always turns to Ruthalin Feldsted when she needs an ear—sharing her deepest confidences, her everyday musings, and her bits of horrified gossip. Yet Ada dies inside whenever Ruthalin’s country-cousin manners poke out in public.

Latham Runyon, a history professor, and Erval Feldsted, a hospital engineer, bond every Sunday night over gooey desserts and vigorous religious discussion, a game their children call Stump the Rabbi. Underneath their balding heads and graying temples, each man desperately seeks a sign that God would choose him as a buddy.

The Feldsted and Runyon children, running breathlessly through each other’s houses and backyards, have long considered each other substitute cousins. However, Ginni Runyon plots to change herself from the girl next door to the girl Marc Feldsted can’t live without.

And when Boxford’s Mormons mix with the rest of the town, everybody could use a field guide to the other species.

Laugh, cry, and shake your head with the Runyons and Feldsteds as they make their way through the decade that brought us leisure suits and urban decay.

Review:

In 1970's Maryland, the landscape is rapidly changing. Particularly for transplants from the Western United States. In this collection of short stories, the tales of some Mormon families is shared as they work their way through their own lives. Each family has different things to deal with, but they each have a connecting thread through their faith and the area that they live in. Some things may change, but these families will make sure that they make it through together.

I have come to have an appreciation for short stories as I've gotten older. They allow for me to get an entire contained story in one sitting. This collection of tales did a great job of that. I felt like they were complete stories in and of themselves, but they also had threads of characters that connected them throughout. I did find the first story a little hard to get in to, but once everything settled down I enjoyed the stories greatly.

I think one of my favorite ones was actually the second story. In it, one man is contemplating the replacement of the current Stake President. Any LDS person knows this is a pretty big deal, and I found this story to be so real. Everything that the characters were doing and saying felt like people I knew. These stories manage to tell a story about certain people in a certain period of time, but they also feel universal at the same time. I greatly enjoyed these stories which I feel were simultaneously a slice of life and a slice of faith.
