Angels Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Angels, Agents of Light, Love, and Power by Donald W. Parry!

Stories are told around the world of persons who have received help or comfort from someone they couldn't see—an angel or spirit who guided them or in some other way gave them assistance from beyond the veil.
But just who are these angels? Are they even real?
Although angels are a vital part of Latter-day Saint history and doctrine, their roles and purposes are often misunderstood. In this inspiring volume, author Donald W. Parry discusses in a clear and understandable way what we can learn from the scriptures and from modern prophets and apostles about angels and their missions.
Here you will find answers to such questions as the following:
  • What are angels?
  • What powers and abilities are angels given?
  • How do angels communicate with mortals?
  • What are the assigned missions and roles of angels?
  • How do angels reveal truth and teach the doctrines of the gospel?
  • How do angels minister to and comfort mortals?
  • What is the role of guardian angels in the modern world?
When just the thought of someone watching out for us can give us hope in challenging times, to realize that angels minister light, love, and power to us, whether we are aware of them or not, gives us unparalleled understanding, comfort, and peace.
Find the book at Deseret Books.
Donald W. Parry, a professor of the Hebrew Bible at Brigham Young University holds the Abraham O. Smoot Professorship. For nearly twenty years he has served as a member of the prestigious international team of translators of the Dead Sea Scrolls and is the author or coauthor of more than thirty books and numerous articles on the Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls. He has coauthored with his brother, Jay A. Parry, several books for Latter-day Saints, including Understanding Isaiah, Understanding the Signs of the Times, and most recently, Symbols and Shadows: Unlocking a Deeper Understanding of the Atonement. Brother Parry, who has served in the Church as a bishop, a temple worker, and high councilor, is a popular speaker at BYU Education Week. He and his wife, Camille Parry, are the parents of six children.

Review:
Angels have long been a source of interest to mortals. Their images have been depicted in art for thousands of years. They have been included in songs and other writings for just as long. This book takes the chance to separate the myths from the facts by using scripture and other accounts of interactions with angels to teach some very interesting truths. It's an interesting chance to learn what you do and do not know about something we have all heard so much about.

I loved the approach this book took. Each chapter was a fact about angels, and then the evidence was laid out in very clear fashion. A lot of the evidence is based on scripture with some more recent statements from LDS leaders added in. There are also other accounts, usually from early church leaders, to help give a fuller picture. Because everything is sourced so well, it's easy to figure out exactly where everything is coming from. This helps to give the reader a chance to search and ponder the things in the book.
There were a lot of things to learn from this book, and I found it to be very entertaining while still being informative. Two things really stuck out with me while reading this. The first was it seems like many of us may have had interactions with angels unawares. How cool is that thought? It made me want to be nicer to everyone I meet as you just never know who you are talking to. The other thought was how loved we are. We are never left alone on the Earth. There are always so many people trying to help us get through this life, and this book offered some concrete proof of that. This is a book that I think many people will enjoy and feel lighter for having read it.

Book provided for review.

Spring Cleaning Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Spring Cleaning Giveaway Hop!

So I have some great ARC's to giveaway (and maybe a book or two). They've been taking up far too much room in my bookshelf. So here's the deal. I will have one easy entry. That's all.

I will try to list the books I have on here. Unfortunately I am out of town and forgot to write them all down. Oops! But I will just draw names until I am out of books. First winner will get first choice, etc. Sounds exciting!

I know this is a bit of a mystery, but hey, what's life without some mystery. They are all books I have read before, and they have all reviewed on this site. I'll post a full list when I get home in a couple days. I do know they include:

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
Hourglass by Myra McEntire
Secretly Smitten by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Denise Hunter, & Diann Hunt
The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin
Grave Consequences by Lisa T. Bergren (this is not an ARC but it has a ripped page...I can't exactly trade it, but it's a totally readable book)

I think I have more to add to that list...or that may be it...I'll update it when I get home.

This is for US only as shipping is a beast elsewhere. Thanks so much for stopping by and good luck!

Review:

It's Christmastime again, which means sad memories for Sonia Pettit. It's been seven years since her daughter Jody suddenly left home with no explanation. The following years saw the death of Sonia's husband, broken-hearted since Jody left. It's also caused her son to become bitter and jaded. Every year though Sonia hopes against hope that Jody will return, and Sonia is forced turn to God to try and find the peace and forgiveness she needs. Meanwhile Jody is dealing with the consequences of her rash decision to leave. Jody's beginning to wonder if maybe she should try returning home. Can Sonia and Jody manage to make this Christmas different from the last one?

This was a short story, which made it an easy read during this busy holiday season. It had a great story and message. There was a lot of sadness, but also a lot of hope. Sonia wanted nothing more than to see those living members of her family back home with her. Her son's bitterness was sad to read about, but I felt I understood where he was coming from. Jody was an interesting character as well. Her need for freedom led her to a far-off land, and her life had not been better for it. It seemed like she made poor decision after poor decision, and this greatly affected her.

This book is great to read during the Christmas season. It makes you want to connect with family, especially those that may be far away or estranged. I really felt the Christmas spirit coming through, and in the end I was filled with hope. This book was enjoyable, but it also had meaning and purpose. It will make you feel the spirit of the season as you read it.

Finding the Baby Jesus Blog Tour

Tour Schedule

Welcome to the blog tour for Finding the Baby Jesus by Kimball Fisher!

After being forced to wear lederhosen for the annual holiday card picture, twelve-year-old Chris thinks that the least his parents can do is get him the Tony Hawk skateboard he wants for Christmas. But when he recovers the hand-carved Baby Jesus that everyone thought had been destroyed in a fire the year his Grandma died, Chris realizes that some gifts are even more important than skateboards.

When the author had to discontinue a cherished tradition of reading Christmas stories out loud with his family and holiday guests each week in December, he wrote Finding the Baby Jesus. He had been unable to locate enough meaningful stories that could be read in a single sitting with wiggly children.

Author Kimball Fisher

Kimball Fisher writes novels for young readers. He is also a best-selling business author, professional speaker, and management consultant. Some of his past jobs include: sailboat builder, ghost writer (not as scary as it sounds), illustrator, and factory manager (more scary than it sounds). For fun he builds furniture, stained-glass windows, and writing pens.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities (with minors in English, Asian Studies, and Japanese), and a Master of Organizational Behavior degree from Brigham Young University. He and his amazing wife Reenie live in Portland, Oregon, where they have seen pheasants, coyotes, and a bobcat in their own backyard.

Review:

Chris is not having the best Christmas. He's pretty sure he's not getting the one thing he really wants, and he's having to celebrate the holiday without his beloved Grandma. Things start looking up when Chris's Grandpa proves to have a great night planned. Chris gets exactly what he wants, but he soon learns there may be another boy his age who needs it much more. Chris will sacrifice much, but he will gain even more as the memory of his Grandma helps to increase the Christmas spirit.

This story is a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas! The brevity is fantastic because it allows for the story to keep young people's attention. It's short enough to be enjoyed in one sitting, which is the perfect thing for the busy holiday season. It's also written in a beautiful way that children of all ages will be able to relate to. I loved this story, and I think it will be a wonderful way to bring in the true meaning and spirit of Christmas. This story will make a great new Christmas tradition, so definitely check it out.
