The Little Girl and Her Shadow Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for The Little Girl and Her Shadow by O.K. Reade!

Having the cutest dresses, the best toys, and the softest bed isn’t enough to make this little girl happy. All she ever does is whine and complain. Finally, her shadow decides to teach her a lesson she’ll never forget! With a gentle reminder about the value of gratitude and friendship, this delightfully illustrated picture book will charm children and parents alike.

About the author:
O. K. Reade lives in New York City with his son. He is a mathematics teacher by day and a writer/cartoonist by night.
Review:

For the little girl who has it all, life can still be hard. Sometimes it's never enough. So the little girl with it all with complain and complain, until one day her shadow has had enough. Will her shadow leaving be enough to teach the grumpy girl a lesson?

This book was so cute, and it had a great message as well. The little girl is never given a name, but she's certainly not very happy. Despite everything she has, she constantly complains about everything and everyone. She certainly does not like herself. One day though, her shadow leaves to play with another, much happier girl. The little girl with everything manages to learn a thing or two from her shadow and this girl.

I thought the drawing were so bright and fun. Also, this book is written in rhyme, and it manages to have a wonderful rhythm to it. It just seems to bounce along. Young kids will certainly enjoy this book, and it has a wonderful lesson for them to learn as well. It's a story that can brighten up your day.

Review:

Travel is sometimes inevitable, but it can feel like an impossible distance for children. This book takes a chance to teach children about the beauty of the world and how we can stay connected. With pictures and rhyme it helps children to know that no distance can keep love apart for very long.

I absolutely loved this book. I thought that the pictures were gorgeous, and really gave a good sense of travel and different parts of the world. They still managed to show connection and sameness as well though. It was very well thought out. I especially appreciated the message. Our family is very widespread, and my husband often has to travel for work. It's wonderful to have a sweet book to help show that our family is still family no matter where we are.

Review:

Spring is a wonderful time to watch the world renew and grow new life. In this book, Rachel enjoys the outdoors in her own special way- through yoga! Incorporating some fairly basic yoga poses, Rachel and her dog Sammy enjoy the fresh spring air around them. Key words for each pose help link the poses to the story. Rachel can help people all over enjoy the beautiful spring world and yoga.

This was a very cute book. I love the bright colors and happy looking pictures. Rachel and her dog take a quick tour of the world outside and truly enjoy spring. I love the idea of incorporating yoga poses into the story as well. It's a fun way to really get kids (and even adults) into the book. This book just made me feel happy. I think it's a beautiful way to enjoy getting to know nature in new and fun ways!

I Hope They Call Me on a Mission Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for I Hope They Call Me on a Mission by Benjamin Hyrum White and Corey Egbert!

It’s never too young to prepare! This charmingly illustrated picture book teaches children what it’s like to be a missionary, from riding a bike to studying the gospel to having a companion, and everything they can do now to be ready so that when the time comes, they’ll be the best missionaries they can be. Colorful and cute, it’s a perfect gift for baptisms and birthdays.

About the Author:

Ben White is the author of 10 Questions to Answer while Preparing for a Mission. He has been a Seminary Teacher from 2003 to the present. He has a M.A. in Religious Education from BYU, B.S. in Marriage, Family, and Human Development from BYU. He is an EFY speaker and has recorded two talks with the Mormon Channel on their “For the Youth” program.

About the Illustrator:
Corey Egbert has always loved books and art, so when he discovered that he could create both at the same time by being an illustrator, he couldn’t have been happier. His illustrations can be seen in The Niuhi Shark Saga books and the album covers of recording artist Rob Taylor. He lives in Buena Vista, Virginia, with his wife Natalya, son Oliver, and their cat, Rex.

Review:

For young LDS children, hearing about missions starts at a young age. Many questions may arise though. Like what exactly does a missionary do anyway? Why do we go on missions. This book takes these questions and gives straightforward answers. It even tells what children can do to prepare for their mission now. It's bright and colorful pictures and clear explanations are sure to entertain and teach our children what exactly a mission is all about.

Since I have a young son, I love children's books. Especially ones that help teach him. This was a fantastic book in that respect. The pictures are bright and fun. They help to illustrate the points very well. I absolutely loved the different topics touched on in relation to missions. I think my favorite one was actually that missionaries get rejected. What a beautiful way to give realistic expectations yet still teach some important life lessons about being true to oneself. This is definitely a book that so many people will enjoy. It keeps the topic light and fun while still being able to teach on a level that children will understand.

Seek & Find Book of Mormon Stories Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Seek & Find Book of Mormon Stories by Jason Pruett!

Search for Nephi, Moroni, and other hidden prophets and characters from the scriptures in this fun picture game book. Featuring scenes from the Book of Mormon, this book will keep kids entertained as they look for their favorite scripture heroes and hidden objects in the colorful illustrations. Perfect for home, church, or on the go, it makes learning the scriptures fun for everyone.

Jason Pruett has a BFA in Industrial Design from Brigham Young University and an MFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University. He has created art for games and animation. Jason currently illustrates picture books and the children’s comic book Jimmy Brass, 2nd Grade Detective. He lives in the Los Angeles area with his wife.

Review:

There are books that help teach us the stories in the scriptures. There are stories that let us have fun. This book aims to do both. In the history of classic seek and find books before it, Seek & Find Book of Mormon Stories takes those familiar stories from the Book of Mormon stories and adds a fun new angle. With many things to find in the pictures, this book will be sure to entertain while helping people to remember some of the great Book of Mormon stories.

I was so excited for this book because my son loves these seek and find books. They are a staple of our Sundays. After several Sundays, I can say for sure that this passes the child and parent test. The pictures are bright and busy. Some of the things are relatively easy to find while others required much more searching. There are also bonus things to find in each picture. To be honest we haven't even looked for those because we have so much fun doing the main things in each picture. This is a book that all ages can enjoy. It is Sacrament Meeting quiet tested and approved in this family!

Monster Goose Nursery Rhymes Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Monster Goose Nursery Rhymes by Henry, Josh, and Harrison Herz and illustrated by Abigail Larson!

Enter an enchanted land of mythical creatures where manticores reign and ogres roar-a land of mystery and fright. A unique twist on traditional rhymes of everyone's youth, "Monster Goose Nursery Rhymes" presents a more sinister approach to these childhood classics, and yet the sing-song nature of the poems renders them playful and jovial at the same time. Little Witch Muffet is not frightened by a silly, little spider; she simply adds him to her stew!

Rotten zombies, giants, dwarves, and goblins mingle with werewolves, centaurs, and fauns. Follow along the skeleton stepping stones, scale up a palisade, claw at the window of a tasty child and bake him into a pumpkin shell. Monsters cook up delicious elvish pie, too! Every kid who has an eensy weensy bit of sense wants a pet with feathers white as snow, who flies like an eagle and bleats like a goat-a hippogriff, of course!

Six forest sprites with four times as many pixies escape from a loaf of bread atop the elaborate table of the fey queen; her feast has flown away! If you enjoy mischief and have a penchant for the morbidly hilarious, the Herzs' rhymes will satisfy your mythological curiosities.

Larson's illustrations give new life to these ancient figures, and her artistic style employs the bold lines and colorful movement of an action-packed comic book. The author also includes a "bestiary" with information about the book's legendary creatures, which hail from Scotland, Germany, Italy, Persia, Haiti, and Scandinavia.

Summary provided by Goodreads.

Review:

Everyone has heard of Mother Goose's nursery rhymes, but have you ever heard of Monster Goose? This book takes familiar stories and adds some fun new twists. Where else can you read the tale of This Little Hydra, and much more menacing substitute for This Little Piggy? With beautiful illustrations, this book will entertain in a whole new way.

I love to have a retelling of a story everyone is familiar with, so this book was right up my alley. So many nursery rhymes became so much more interesting and fun through these new versions. If the old versions were ever not quite dangerous enough for you, then these stories will probably be just right. I loved the illustrations as well. They managed to be beautiful while still portraying the mood of the stories. However, they also did an amazing job of not being too scary. Just creepy enough. This is a fun and beautiful book that will be sure to get you thinking past the usual nursery rhymes into a whole new world.

Message From The Author: Elsa Takaoka

Elsa Takaoka, Author

On the first day of National Poetry Month in April of 2014, I set the goal of writing a poem a day. My little girls and I would sit at the kitchen table - my five year-old doodled and my one year-old scribbled while Mommy wrote. As I struggled to find inspiration, I would occasionally glance at my eldest girl, who has been a doodling machine since the age of two and will often draw pictures for hours. Her doodles contained many of her favorite things: twins and mermaids, princesses and pets. But on closer inspection, they also contained stories of brave and bold little girls -girls with real feelings who fought, made-up, cried and got angry. These girls sailed ships, fought beasts and were pirates. These girls were tender and caring, who doodled and read. Her art contained REAL little girls- imaginative, clever and able to do anything they set their minds to. My hope is that I was able to crawl into the mind of a child and bottle up even a bit of the innocent yet powerful confidence of clever little girls everywhere.

About the Authors: Subhash & Sujata Kommuru

Subhash and Sujata Kommuru

Subhash and Sujata Kommuru hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself. Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that brings them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds color to it. You get the idea! These stories are their attempt to share a glimpse of their childhood days with their son. He is their inspiration to write short stories that have meaning to them and provide teaching in some shape or form.

Review:

Everyone is afraid of Babbar, the tiger that rules Tadoba. However, things begin to change as Babbar makes friends with Hasmukh, a scared but funny donkey. Can these two overcome their differences to become friends? And what will this mean for the rest of the animals?

I absolutely loved this story. It's a beautiful tale of how powerful friendship is tied in with overcoming our prejudices a bit as well. The animals are afraid of Babbar and find him quite frightening. However, Babbar is just sad and lonely. It's not until Hasmukh meets him and takes a chance on friendship that the two begin to evolve into better animals. Each one is able to help overcome a weakness in the other. What a wonderful lesson for people of all ages. The illustrations are fantastic as well. They really draw me in. This book is full of beauty and fun with a great story wrapped up in it.

Book provided for review.
