Not only are her discoveries difficult to accept, but now she is running out of time and running for her life, while trying to unravel the mystery of what they want from her. Forced into a battle set into motion long before she was born, will Skylar find the answers she seeks, or will she die trying?

The Story

***Winner of a 2013 Newbury Comics Award!***

Raising Sleeping Stones - inside page

When sisters Kiva and DeeDee Stone discover a mysterious plot that threatens them and everything they care about, they have to take a crash course in the ancient art of DreamKeeping to survive. As two elder Dream Keepers lead them up the Varruvyen river to the Eyle of Return, they show the girls how to gain dream powers greater than anything they had ever imagined. But can they become strong enough to face the monsters that haunt their dreams at night, strong enough to fight the enemies that draw nearer each day? The answer lies somewhere in the broken history of Orora Crona, the Valley of Dreams lost centuries ago, and whoever can piece it together first will rule for centuries to come.

The Experience

Raising Sleeping Stones - The Experience

THE APP: Raising Sleeping Stones has been released as an electronic book in app form because it will do what dreams do by weaving together a story, music, illustrations, and interactive features to create a richer, more layered reading experience.

STORY: The adventures of Kiva and DeeDee will become clearer and richer if you pause at the end of a chapter to think about the new clues you could use to start unlocking the mysteries of the earlier chapters ... or to predict what will happen in the next ones.

DREAM TECHNIQUES: Kiva and DeeDee meet the DreamKeepers who teach them how to not only remember and explore their dreams, but also how to use them to develop incredible super powers including flying, changing shape, traveling to the past, living underwater, creating impossible buildings, looking into the future, and more. This may be a fantasy series, but most of the dream techniques the characters use in the book really work, so readers can actually get better at dreaming by following what the characters do.

STORYSCORE: The music tells the same story at the same time as the words, but adds additional musical cues to help you figure out what's happening between the characters or who might be involved in the plot against them. The closer you listen to the music, the more secrets you can uncover.

DYNAMIC ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations represent the main characters and events in the story; but, if you answer the questions at the end of certain chapters, you can unlock hidden layers to the illustrations, layers that show what lies beneath the surface of the story.

TUMBLR & FACEBOOK: Readers will be able to share their ideas, questions, drawings, and/or their predictions about the book on Tumblr and will be able to find sound clips, albums of drawings, updates, and other extras on Facebook as well.

About the Author: P.H.T. Bennet

P.H.T. Bennet

P.H.T. Bennet began exploring the world of the dreams when he was a child and never bothered to stop when he grew up. He had the good luck to have two daughters, Juliette and Paola, who not only served as the inspirations for DeeDee and Kiva, but also shared their dreams and helped him turn their family dreamwork sessions into this book. His lucky streak grew when he married his lovely wife, Mim, who tolerates his turning on a light in the middle of the night to write down ever-crazier dreams and talking about them in the morning as long as he lets her sleep in, first. Though flying dreams are his favorite, he also loves the challenge of rewinding, replaying, and revising nightmares until they have much more interesting (and less brutal) endings, the thrill of breathing and swimming at high speeds underwater, the surprise of creating new works of art, the dangers in meeting, battling, and learning from his Shadow as it changes forms, the delight of returning to Paris, where he lived for 5 years, for delicious meals, and the peacefulness he gets from dream visits with his father, who passed away four years ago. He can’t wait to hear what readers favorite dreams are and what dream skills they hope the book will help them develop. Readers can either share them with him at phtbennet(at)raisingstones(dot)com or with everybody reading the book at http://raisingsleepingstones.tumblr.com

Amazon (Print) | Amazon (Kindle) | Barnes and Noble | Goodreads

About the Author:

Maggie Lyons author

Maggie Lyons was born in Wales and very properly brought up in England before gravitating to Virginia’s coast. She zigzagged her way through a motley slew of careers from (unofficial) British spy to academic editor. Writing and editing nonfiction for adults brought plenty of satisfaction but nothing like the magic she discovered writing for kids. Her children’s books Vin and the Dorky Duet (for ages 7 through 12) and Dewi and the Seeds of Doom (for ages 6 through 10) are available on order at most book stores including Amazon.

Review:

Dewi is just your average young dragon until one day when he gets hit by a fallen rat. Not wanting to leave the at to perish, Dewi takes it upon himself to discover what happened to the poor rat. All of this leads him to a gloomy castle and some very strange happenings. Dewi will have to use everything he has to try and help save the world from this mess.

This is a super cute story. Dewi is a smart dragon, and he's not afraid to find others to help him. He really just wants to help people stay safe and happy. Even people or rats that fall on him from above. Dewi uses this sense of justice to help guide his decisions. Of course, he probably should talk to his dad about more things. Along the way, Dewi manages to get a few jokes in with friends as well. There's fun and action in this book, and many young children will get caught up in the story of Dewi.

Pages:279

Sophie Kendrick’s father has gone missing in the jungles of Costa Rica. Desperate for answers to his whereabouts, she decides to search for him herself. She hires Jack Mathison to guide her through the jungle, but the two of them seem to be at odds from the moment they meet. Sophie finds Jack conceited, sarcastic, and worse, very good-looking. He is totally not her type, so how could she possibly be attracted to him? Likewise, Jack can’t wait to be rid of Sophie and her optimistic outlook. Seriously, how could someone be that nice? Jack isn’t looking for a relationship, and finds the electrifying chemistry between the two of them completely annoying. His job is to lead Sophie to a remote village deep inside the rainforest- her fathers last known location. Still, the jungle is a dangerous place and Jack does everything in his power to protect Sophie, but who will protect his heart?

(Summary and cover via Goodreads)

             **************************************************

Sophie has a pretty amazing life. She's a doctor with a fabulous lawyer boyfriend, but there's something missing. Sophie's dad. He's gone missing in Costa Rica, and Sophie is determined to find out what happened to him. She hires a friend's friend, Jack, to be her guide in Costa Rica. Sophie and Jack have an immediate attraction, but the wild world they are in may make it difficult for them to ever find time to figure things out. Can the manage to stay alive long enough to work through their feelings?

This was a great mix of action and romance. Sophie is a take-charge kind of girl, and nothing is going to change that. While she has a great boyfriend, she just doesn't feel the kind of love that she wants. So she tries to break up with him, but he doesn't seem to accept that. Sophie is determined to move on with her life though. Her number one priority is to find her father who went missing in Costa Rica. She hires the mysterious Jack to help guide her, but Jack also comes with some issues. He's been burned by too many women and doesn't want to have a lot to do with Sophie. Of course, Sophie convinces him to help her out. It probably helps that they have instant attraction.

Both Jack and Sophie make some mistakes, but for the most part I felt like they handled things in a mature and respectful way. They both had things that were causing them to doubt things, and they both needed to work through those issues. I enjoyed their ability to work with each other as well. They made a great pair. There's also some moments of tense action, and this helped to keep the story from getting bogged down in the romance. This was a fun, quick read that left me satisfied.

Excerpt

The sun was just starting to rise, and I knew that her disturbing dream would not lead to sleeping late. I could hear her heart beating faster as she began to wake up. Wrapping myself in my cloak to protect my skin from the dawn’s light (the sun’s rays felt like hundreds of tiny needles on my flesh), I departed the room. Closing the French doors behind me, I waited on the roof for her to appear. I planned to spy on her until she exposed herself as the typical mortal that I knew she must be.

A few moments later, she walked out through the same doors I had just used, dressed only in a cream translucent nightgown. Her ankles were bare and slight, and I could just see the outline of her slim legs beneath her nightdress as the sunlight began to touch her skin. She walked purposely to a small stone bench under a tree that had not yet awoken this year and most likely never would. Just as quickly as she had come, she stood and began to walk back toward her room. I was feeling playful. What did it really matter if I revealed myself? I jumped down without a sound and sat on the bench that she had just occupied. Even though she had only been here but a moment, I could still feel her warmth lingering on the surface. Somehow, she sensed I was there, and she began to run, which was not surprising. I was sure fear motivated her movement. There was no need to pursue. I could catch her easily. But then she did something that put all my old questions to rest and created new ones. She jumped up and grabbed the edge of the roof. Using it as leverage, she flipped her body up into the arch, doing more moves than a gymnast at the Olympics, and landed, facing me, on the roof.

Welcome to the blog tour for The Knife's Edge, part I of The Ronin Saga by Matthew Wolf!

When legends come to life the world trembles from a single name. Ronin. Once-heroes from a different age, they wield elemental powers… wind, water, fire, stone, forest, sun, moon, flesh, and metal.
At the same time, a young man discovers his best friend with a sword in her stomach, and dark wings sprouting from her back. Guards rush onto the scene, accuse him of the act, and he is forced to flee. In a new world without his memories, Gray must find his way amid legends and darkness, as he wrestles with an elemental power inside himself.
A power all too similar to the infamous Ronin…

  • Seventeen-year old Gray is descended from a legendary hero known as a Ronin, and haunted by his forgotten past. He returns home to a wizards’ keep, unaware he is now labeled a murderous traitor for killing his best friend.
Returning could be a death sentence, but the journey alone is perilous. Along the way, Gray discovers he has a grandfather. Now he must reach the city before his only living family dies beneath a madman’s torture. Getting there will be a challenge, however, as an enthrallingly unpredictable woman, a dangerous desert, and a horde of thieves stand in his way. Wielding the banished power of wind, Gray rallies against the poisonous evil that seeks to convert the world to their mantra, “strength is life, weakness death.”
Yet with an affable scoundrel and a clever bookworm at his side, Gray discovers the world’s greatest secret… He is not the only one with hero’s blood, and the legend of the Ronin walk the world once again.

  • Matthew Wolf is the author of THE RONIN SAGA, a nine part YA Epic Fantasy series.  He also loves cake.  Book two is out now, for sneak peek information on Matt and all things Ronin check out: roninsaga.comHe loves connecting with fans, those whirling blades really speak to his soul.  You can reach Matt atTheRoninSaga@Gmail.com, howl "Ronin" at the moon, or throw up a Wolf Signal in the sky.  All valid forms of communication.

    Review of The Knife's Edge:

Kirin is training to be a fearsome warrior, but all the time he's interested in the fables of the Ronin. Ronin were people who wielded great power of the elements. Kirin is simultaneously enthralled and terrified by the thought of the Ronin returning. One day though, things take a drastic turn. Kirin finds his dear friend with a sword through her stomach, and nothing makes any sense. Kirin is forced to run, and he has his memory wiped in the process. The newly named Grey finds out that some things are hard to hide from, and that he may possess powers he only ever dreamed of.

I'm a sucker for a good fantasy book, and this was just that. After feeling initially dropped into the story just a bit too much, things settled down for a good read. I did feel like maybe I could have been fed a little more information about the Ronin earlier on, but that is a minor quibble. There were a lot of forces at play here, but the author managed to do a great job of keeping them from becoming too overwhelming to the reader. There was also a good balance of action and peril without ever feeling like it was too much.

There were several people here that you could cheer for. I felt awful for Kirin in the beginning, and I wish I had gotten a tiny bit more background on the sword and the general story. There is a wonderful world in this book though, full of magic and adventure. I particularly like the use of elements as a source of power. The end is also a great balance of making you feel like you read a complete story while still managing to leave things open and make you want to read more. Fantasy fans will definitely want to check this series out.
