The Third Twin Book Blast

Welcome to the book blast for The Third Twin by CJ Omololu!

third Twin

When they were little, Lexi and her identical twin, Ava, made up a third sister, Alicia. If something broke? Alicia did it. Cookies got eaten? Alicia’s guilty. Alicia was always to blame for everything.

The game is all grown up now that the girls are seniors. They use Alicia as their cover to go out with boys who are hot but not exactly dating material. Boys they’d never, ever be with in real life.

Now one of the guys Alicia went out with has turned up dead, and Lexi wants to stop the game for good. As coincidences start piling up, Ava insists that if they follow the rules for being Alicia, everything will be fine. But when another boy is killed, the DNA evidence and surveillance photos point to only one suspect—Alicia. The girl who doesn’t exist.

As she runs from the cops, Lexi has to find the truth before another boy is murdered. Because either Ava is a killer . . . or Alicia is real.

Review: If I Stay by Gayle Foreman

Title:If I Stay
Author:Gayle Forman
Publisher:Penguin Group
Imprint:Dutton Juvenile
Pub. Date:4/2/2009
ISBN:0525421033 (ISBN13: 9780525421030)
Pages:201

Just listen, Adam says with a voice that sounds like shrapnel.

I open my eyes wide now.
I sit up as much as I can.
And I listen.

Stay, he says.

Choices. Seventeen-year-old Mia is faced with some tough ones: Stay true to her first love—music—even if it means losing her boyfriend and leaving her family and friends behind?

Then one February morning Mia goes for a drive with her family, and in an instant, everything changes. Suddenly, all the choices are gone, except one. And it's the only one that matters.

If I Stay is a heartachingly beautiful book about the power of love, the true meaning of family, and the choices we all make.

(Summary and cover via Goodreads)

              **************************************************

Mia is planning out everything in her life. She's auditioning for Julliard and spending time with her boyfriend, a rising local musician. A simple family drive changes all that though. Mia finds herself caught somewhere between life and death with no way of knowing what she is today. Mia realizes that she has a choice to go or to stay. How can she make such a huge decision though? Mia will have to decide what it is that she truly wants to have.

This was a very interesting book and concept. Of course, I had just read another Young Adult book involving s girl who was hovering somewhere between life and death, so I couldn't help but to compare the two in my head. This book had the more likable main character for sure. Mia is basically a really good kid. She works pretty hard, she loves her friends and family, and she just wants to have a  good life. For her this includes music. She has worked super hard for this, and she would love to see this dream come true. Of course the pull to not stay includes some other equally important factors. So what does she choose?

I didn't love Mia's family as much as I liked her, but she had a good life and she knew it. As she works through her past, you get to see glimpses of her past. Soon, her story unfolds, but it is always tinged with sadness because of the circumstances. I found this book to be interesting and thought-provoking. If this were my choice, what would compel me to stay or to go? Would my life be as full as Mia's had already been? As Mia makes her decision, she leaves you with many things to ponder.

Review:

Melody and Jack were true soulmates. They loved each other more than anything else. Unfortunately Jack passed away and now must watch Melody go through life alone. However, Jack finds a way to come back and help Melody. All he has to do is find someone she can fall madly in love in. By midnight. Christmas Eve. Jack's working on a tight deadline, but he'll do everything in his power to make Melody happy again.

This was a very sweet book. Melody could not just forget the great love of her life Jack. Unfortunately Jack was no longer with her. Jack however had found a way to help influence Melody's life. This meant taking another person's body shape. In some ways this book as like a dating show with an angel/ghost picking the dates. It was funny and fun at the same time. What a sweet thing to do though. Even though he still loved or greatly (or maybe because of that), Jack wanted to see Melody happy with someone again.

This is the perfect book to settle down under some blankets and read. It was enjoyable to see how well Jack knew Melody and all the craziness he went through to find her the perfect man. Of course, the ending in this book is a bit bittersweet in many ways, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. This is a sweet Christmas romance full of love and hope.

Uncovering Cobbogoth Blog Tour

uncover cobbogoth tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Uncovering Cobbogoth by Hannah L. Clark!

Uncover Cobbogoth

Norah Lukens needs to uncover the truth about the fabled lost city of Cobbogoth. After her archaeologist uncle’s murder, Norah is asked to translate his old research journal for evidence and discovers that his murder was a cover-up for something far more sinister. When she turns to neighbor and only friend James Riley for help, she realizes that not only is their bitter-sweet past haunting her every step, but James is keeping dangerous secrets. Can Norah discover what they are before its too late to share her own.

hannah

Author Hannah L. Clark

Hannah L. Clark lives with her husband and their son in the Rocky Mountains. She has always known she would be a storyteller. In 2006 she graduated from Utah Valley University with a bachelor’s degree in English and immediately began writing Uncovering Cobbogoth, the first book in a seven book series based on Clark's mythological brain-child, the Icelandic Legend of the Cobbogothians. Clark loves her family, running, mythology, laughing, soulful bluegrass music, road-trips, studying alternative medicine, retro hairdos, and growing things. Like her heroine Norah, she also kind of believes trees have souls, but must clarify (for her parents' sakes) that she was not raised by hippies. ;-)

Review:

Norah Lukens has always been a bit strange. Her looks and photographic memory have set her apart from her peers, along with her intense love of physics. When her anxiety starts getting severe, her uncle sends her off to a special school. For her 18th birthday Norah is returning back home to Boston to celebrate with her uncle. The celebration is short lived though as her uncle is discovered dead in his home. Things go from bad to worse in a hurry, and Norah finds herself immersed in a world she thought was just myth. Everyone is after Norah, and she must find a way to survive by unlocking secrets very close to the mysterious beings known as the Cobbogoth. Everything will change for Norah...if she can survive.

This story starts out with adventure and doesn't let up until the end. Norah is not a normal girl by any means, and this is made even more apparent as the story progresses. She's smart, but she's also very lonely. I fell like even though Norah is "special," a lot of people can relate to her. She doesn't fit in with anyone, and this leads to a great deal of anxiety, even to the point where they are considering putting her in the hospital. Of course, any person who has read many book can probably see where this is going, although younger readers may not. It is interesting to watch her change though, and try to truly embrace who she is weaknesses and all. This allows her to discover her strengths along the way.

No story is complete without some romance, and this book gives it to us. Norah has always felt close to her friend James, but while she was at school he never communicated with her. Norah finds out the reason behind this, and I'd say James had a pretty good excuse. This was a good example of ways to add some angst to your romance without making it silly. It all made sense in the whole of the plot. This book was an enjoyable read. It took me a chapter or two to really settle in, but things started moving quickly and making more sense so that last few chapters really flew by. It's a very creative and interesting world to get drawn into, and the author is able to leave things open a bit while still taking care of the necessary storylines. Young and old will equally enjoy this book. It's full of fantasy and wonder with a little romance.

Excerpt:

I WOKE UP THE next morning with the never-ending headache and dried tears on my face. I couldn’t remember much about what had happened after I’d come home yesterday. I had a vague recollection of Kim putting me to bed and Mom coming in at some point with a worried look on her face.

I did remember parts of a nightmare. There was a black figure—a horrible, cloaked presence trailing black tar coming after me. I had to admit that scared the crap out of me. Dreams could be weird sometimes, that much I knew from experience, but I’d never had any that were quite so vividly terrifying.

Lying in bed, processing, I tried to wriggle out from the remains of yesterday. It had wrapped me up in a cocoon of thoughts and a tangle of blankets. I finally realized that I had swapped ends in the night; my head was at the foot of my bed and my feet were on my pillow. Whoa, I must have slept rough—rougher than usual, anyway. After a few minutes, I pulled myself up on my elbows and looked at the clock. Wonder of all wonders, it was still early and I had time before school. I struggled out of bed—backwards—and trudged to the bathroom. Guess bad dreams have good points to them. At least I have time for a decent start to my day. Maybe today will be better.

Inevitably, I thought about him—the boy who I felt knew me. Michael Alexander fluttered into and around my thoughts, and I started to blush again. I couldn’t explain what was happening to me. Why do I react like this to him? It was really weird, because I could see his face just as clearly as if he was standing right in front of me. Normally I couldn’t do that with guys I liked. Come on, Airel. Get a hold of yourself. You haven’t said two words to him, and you like him already? What a moron.

I turned the shower to super-hot and waited for the warmth to kick in. I looked in the mirror and noticed that the normal dark circles under my eyes were surprisingly faint this morning. I would have thought that after a day and night like I’d just had, I’d look like the corpse bride.

I flashed my fake smile into the mirror, and that made me smile for real. I didn’t really think I was “all that,” but I knew I had a few good things going for me. I felt like I looked really good today, and I had just rolled out of bed. That made me smile even more.

After a long, hot shower, I pulled on my blue jeans and my favorite T-shirt—the one with Bob Marley on it. I pulled my hair back in a ponytail. I always had to do that after a shower—otherwise, it would get frizzy and curl like no one’s business, turning into a puffball or a fro.

I headed downstairs, not having to sprint for once. Our house was like most, with several bedrooms, a family room, and a big kitchen. The upstairs was where my room was, plus my parents’ room and two spare rooms: one for guests, one for Kim. She stayed the night at least three times a week. Most of the time she just slept on the floor in my room, even though Mom had set her up with her own, and we would end up talking all night. So her room was mostly just a landing place for all her junk.

I put two strawberry Pop-Tarts in the toaster, noticing for the first time that it was raining outside. Great. One last day of sunshine yesterday and I was sick for most of it. I made a mental note to grab a light jacket before I left the house. I felt fine today, I noticed. Other than the bad dream, I felt good. I looked good, and I knew it. I wanted to get out and do something after school, but figured it was too cold and rainy.

I nibbled my Pop-Tarts, which tasted good all the way down to my painfully empty stomach. I really hoped I’d be able to keep it down today. Michael’s face presented itself in my memory. I tried to banish him from my mind. I had to squash any thought of him—I didn’t need or want that kind of drama in my life right now.
I grabbed my jacket and started for the door, trying not to wake my mom. She never slept in and today was her day off, so I knew she would want to. She was like most moms. Protective and maybe a bit overbearing, but she meant well and I knew it. She worked at a flower shop. Not that she had to, but she liked to keep busy.

Since I was an only child and in school most of the day, she would climb the walls all alone if she didn’t do something, so Dad had told her to go find something she would enjoy. She found a little shop called Just Flowers and started working there years ago. I teased her constantly about being so old-fashioned—such a stereotypical housewife, working at a flower shop—but she loved all things plants. If it was nice out, she could be found without exception in the yard, planting, digging, or pulling weeds. We had the nicest yard in the neighborhood.

As for Dad, well, I wasn’t sure exactly what he did, but he was gone a lot. He was a sales rep for some company or other—it didn’t matter much to me. He was a quiet guy and didn’t bring his job home. He got bonuses sometimes, which we always used to go on family vacations. Those times were the happiest for me, when we were all together.

Last summer was the best. Dad took us all to Disney World, and I even got to bring Kim along. Her mom was cool with stuff like that. Kim’s dad left when she was young, so she was basically part of our family.
The rain was really coming down, so I ran to my car, hoping to dodge the raindrops. I opened the driver’s door to my Honda and got in. Before I could turn the key, I felt a horrendous, debilitating pain dragging razor blades up and down my arms and legs, deep inside me. “Owww,” I shrieked before I could stop myself. But then, just as fast as it had come, it was gone, and I was left sitting there in its wake, hyperventilating and wondering what was wrong with me.

Life In the Palace Blog Tour

Life in the palace tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Life In the Palace by Catherine Green!

Life in the Palace

After a lifetime in the shadow of her sister, Chloe is severely phobic of the chronically cool. Seth is everything she avoids; a pre-med philosophy major who works in a bar, plays in a band and is so good looking that grown women stare at him in the street. But it’s hard to say no to your soul mate. Thinking she’s maxed out her supply of destiny, Chloe settles down to enjoy the happily-ever-after.

Tal says that she’s one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance. Chloe assumes this is code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo.’ Actually Tal’s main extracurricular activity is fighting the forces of Oblivion. The People never need to hide what they are because no one ever believes them. Until Chloe does.

Chloe sets out to help Tal and The People as much as she can as an outsider. Seth says as long as no one wears their underpants on the outside Chloe can do what she likes. What he doesn’t say is that he’s also one of The People, although non-practicing. But as the Final Battle draws nearer, Chloe realizes it’s time for Seth to go collect his regulation sword. The only thing standing in his way is her. Seth says he’ll give up his place in heaven to stay with her. Chloe must choose between Seth’s soul and her own happiness.

Review:

Chloe Diaz is starting a new life in Montreal. She's discovering a whole new world, one that includes her classmate Tal and the very handsome Seth. Seth and Chloe are immediately drawn to each other, but Chloe also begins to find interest in Tal's background. Tal belongs to a group of believers known as "The People," and Chloe begins to learn more about them. The People are caught in an eternal battle on an entirely different spiritual plane, and they create ammunition and strength for the battle by being of service in the physical realm. Unfortunately for Chloe, the worlds of Tal's beliefs and her relationship with Seth become intertwined in ways Chloe could have never imagined, and things will never be the same.

So I found the concept of this book to be really interesting. However, I'm not sure the execution lived up to the idea. The relationship of Chloe and Seth was very quick, and while I don't particularly enjoy that kind of thing it made sense within the context of the book. The plot kind of stalled out after that though. Some of that was due to some of the necessary exposition with Tal and The People, and then setting up their relationship with Chloe and Seth. Things kind of drug from there though until very close to the end. When things really began to wrap up together, things got very exciting again. Maybe this is just due to my general dislike of schmaltzy romance? There is a lot of that in this book. Think Twilight levels of sudden soulmate-ness. I know a lot of people dig that though, so they may not feel like it drags as much as I did.

I did like Chloe though. She was a girl who did things her own way and for her own reasons. Even while being caught up in this sudden romance, she was very capable of making her own decisions that were best for her life. Seth is very much a dream guy who tons of girls will want to see more of. Tal and her group were even more interesting to me. I wanted even more explanation of what they did and why and how it all worked. I did think that Tal and friends did not come off looking very good with the way they handled the Chloe situation, but then no one really comes off looking the hero in all this. In the end, I'm not sure how I feel about this book. The ending felt very unsatisfying for me, but it certainly left me hanging. However this is a creative book with interesting concepts. I think people who enjoy romance and adventure will find things to like in this book.
