Blog Tour: 3,000 Miles to Eternity

Welcome to the blog tour for 3,000 Miles to Eternity by Duane & Selena Pannell!

Years before online dating became a respectable option, two broken and imperfect souls digitally crossed paths as they tried to find their way back to God. This fascinating true story, told through journals and emails, will have you smiling from start to finish and shedding a few tears along the way. Engaging and entertaining, it’s the perfect reminder of the power of love, redemption, and hope.

About the authors:
DUANE AND SELENA PANNELL “met” online while living in Virginia and Alberta, Canada.  After a complicated long-distance relationship spanning four years, they married and have a son together. Their first book is borne of yet another separation in their lives when Selena was in Alberta for several months in 2013 with her dying father.
Duane was going through their old correspondence because he is a “mushy man” and thought this was a story worth telling.  After some coaxing, he convinced Selena, and with a little help from Google Docs, they began their collaboration on “3,000 Miles To Eternity.”
Today they serve as missionary group leaders in the LDS (Mormon) Addiction Recovery Program where they lead two 12 Step meetings a week.  Duane is putting the final touches on a manuscript addressing addiction recovery while Selena homeschools their son and teaches archery in her spare time.

Review:
As the internet began booming, there were new things being explored all the time. One of these includes online dating. Enter LDS Singles Online, a group where people were looking for love. Or not in the case of Selena. As a divorced mother of 5, Selena decides that studying the men on LDSSO would be an interesting undertaking. One day she begins talking to Duane, a man 3000 miles away. What unfolds becomes an intriguing tale of forgiveness, letting go of the past, and learning to open yourself up to new possibilities.

The story of Duane and Selena begins separately, told through their individual journal entries. Both of the have led lives that are different from many of their fellow congregation members. Duane was a drug addict and alcoholic, married to an equally self-destructive woman. As Duane hit bottom and began the long road to cleaning up his life, his wife was less interested. They eventually divorced. So Duane was left with children and a good sense of humor. Selena meanwhile married a nice man, but someone who was not LDS. This led to some conflict eventually, and she soon began to realize that the love was not there anymore. It was Selena's sense of humor that made Duane message her, while Selena found a willing partner in answering her probing questions about men in general (and LDS men in particular).

This book was fascinating! I think the circumstance of meeting online allowed Selena and Duane a certain freedom. They both intended on never seeing the other one really. Of course, like many great stories things didn't happen how they planned it. They soon found themselves looking forward to their conversations and talking to each other. They do have some ups and downs like any couple. I appreciate that they were so willing to show everything. There were so many things they they talked about that I found so interesting. This book reads like a romance novel with the satisfaction of knowing that it was in fact real. It was a super fun book to read!

Review:

Spring is a wonderful time to watch the world renew and grow new life. In this book, Rachel enjoys the outdoors in her own special way- through yoga! Incorporating some fairly basic yoga poses, Rachel and her dog Sammy enjoy the fresh spring air around them. Key words for each pose help link the poses to the story. Rachel can help people all over enjoy the beautiful spring world and yoga.

This was a very cute book. I love the bright colors and happy looking pictures. Rachel and her dog take a quick tour of the world outside and truly enjoy spring. I love the idea of incorporating yoga poses into the story as well. It's a fun way to really get kids (and even adults) into the book. This book just made me feel happy. I think it's a beautiful way to enjoy getting to know nature in new and fun ways!

Teaching Children About Sex Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Teaching Children About Sex: Using the Temple as Your Guide by Cherri Brooks!

It’s time for the talk. Teach your children the truth about sexual intimacy in a world of shifting values and ideas. With expert advice and age-appropriate wording, you learn how to use the temple as a beautiful analogy to discuss with your kids the sacred subject of sex. Timely and clear, this book is a must-read for parents, teachers, and leaders.

About the author:
Cherri H. Brooks grew up in Centerville, Utah and attended Utah State University where she earned her M.S. in Family and Human Development. She is the author of the LDS Living Magazine article, “Talking to Kids about Sex.” Her blog is www.timelesstemples.blogspot.com. She lives in Clarksville, Tennessee, with her husband and three children.

Review:
Ah sex. Talking about it to children is often viewed as trial to be endured. However, it is a very important topic the becomes even more important as the world around us changes. This book uses the temple and temple preparation as an example for a way to discuss everything with your children starting from a young age. It gives straightforward answers from both biological and value viewpoints. By keeping the lines of communication open, you can allow for a truly wonderful experience.

My son isn't old enough that I've had to worry about going into a lot of detail about sex, but I have tried to be honest and truthful about things like where babies come from. I was both excited and a little scared about reading this book. I wasn't sure if it would approach things from a point-of-view that I would agree with. I was so pleased to be surprised. This book is amazing! I love how positive this book was. So many times talking about sex becomes a negative thing because we want them so much to understand the importance of chastity. This is not always the best approach though. We need to find a balance so that children and youth understand how important sex is and why we save it for the appropriate time and place.

I love that this book emphasizes the need for communication on this topic starting from a young age. This book helped me see areas I have done well and areas in which I could use some major improvement. There are questions and answers for each age group that have some great help in them. At the end of there book there is some dealing with "special" topics in this area. They were absolutely full of fantastic information and direction. I wish that everyone would read this book. It manages to be very sex positive while using the temple as a guide to show why chastity is so important to us. This is a book I know I'll reference for years to come. With it's beautiful message and positive tone, it takes what could be a touchy subject and makes it approachable for everyone.

A graduate of Utah State University, she currently teaches 2nd grad in Longview, Washington.

Review:
Sometimes studying the scriptures can be a bit of a chore, and they don't always make a lot of sense. This book helps make scripture studying come alive in a very fun way- puzzles. With word searches, word scrambles, crosswords, and other brain teasers, Scripture Puzzlers helps you to learn the content in new and interesting ways. This book keeps things challenging while still helping you see things in fun new ways.

First of all, I love puzzles. I do them for fun, so this book was right up my alley. I am also not a grand scriptorian. I don't have everything memorized or know where every story is. I fell in love with this book. These puzzles are definitely aimed at older kids and adults. Some are fairly simple while some require quite a bit more thought. I didn't have time to do every puzzle, but the ones I did check out were so much fun. The book is divided into puzzles for each set of scriptures (like Old Testament, New Testament, etc). They really were a lot of fun for me. I can see them as a great addition to Seminary or Sunday School classes. It helps you learn things without it feeling boring or repetitive. I aim to do every one of these puzzles. What a great way to have fun while learning all about the scriptures!

Review:

Everyone needs to reevaluate things from time to time. This book shows some ways that you can take charge of your life. It gives helpful quotes, ideas, and tasks to help you take charge of your life. Some of the things in this book are very broad and inspiring ideas, while some are so simple that you begin to wonder why you hadn't already done this. However, all of them focus on helping you be come the best you that you can be.

I appreciate many of the things in this book. There were so many things that I read and though, "Wow, I totally need to work on that." One of the main ideas in here is that you cannot be helpful to others without first taking care of yourself. I liked that this book really helped me to see that sometimes it is OK to focus just on myself. I also liked the discussions on supporting other women and just loving others and ourselves more. Those are things that I am always trying to work on, and this book motivated me to keep trying. I think every person can find something in this book that will inspire and help them to become even better than they already are. It is a fun and helpful book!

What Good Men Do Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for What Good Men Do by David S. Baxter!

From slavery abolitionist William Wilberforce to Olympic gold medalist Eric Liddell, great men throughout history have left an example for us to look to. Elder David S. Baxter takes a closer look at the characteristics and attributes of good men so that you can apply them too. He acknowledges that there are no perfect men, but the works and attributes of good men have profound effects. There is no end to the good that a man can do!

David Baxter was born in Stirling, Scotland, and became a General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 2006. He previously worked in senior leadership roles in the telecommunications industry, and on the boards of various UK Government agencies, and holds a BSc degree in economics. In his Church service he has been a bishop, a stake president, a member of a mission presidency, and an Area Seventy. He has served in Church area presidencies in Europe and the Pacific. His early home life was traumatic and disrupted, and in 2009 he underwent surgery to remove two brain tumors. He and his wife, Dianne are the parents of four children and nine grandchildren.

Review:

There are a lot of great examples of good men throughout time. In this book, Elder David S. Baxter gives examples of some very good men and details what helped to make them good men. Their diverse stories give great inspiration and great examples to follow. Elder Baxter also gives some ways to be "good boys" for younger readers. All of this combines to make for a good read for everyone.

I loved a lot of the ideas presented in this book. Several good men were covered. Their stories were told, and then detail was given as to what made them good men. I found this to be very interesting and inspirational. Even though this book was directed at men, I learned a lot too. I even learned some history as there were a couple men that I was unfamiliar with. Their stories often tied in with Elder Baxter's life as well. I particularly enjoyed the chapter written for boys. As the mother of a boy, I liked the guidelines set down to help boys keep themselves on a good track. Overall I think everyone can learn something from this book. It will help keep your eyes lifted and your life good.

Walking With the Women of the New Testament Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Walking With the Women of the New Testament by Heather Farrell!

With questions about women’s roles in the Priesthood, studying the New Testament proves a useful tool. The New Testament contains accounts of over 50 women and their interactions with Christ and the early Church. With beautiful artwork, charts, historical information, and study tools, this book delves into the lives of these faithful women and shows God’s great love for them and their great role in His plan.

Heather Farrell’s love for the scriptures began young, when at the age of 11 she hid a flashlight under her pillow so she could read the Old Testament late at night. Her love for the women in scriptures began when, her oldest son was born around Christmas time and she felt a kinship with Mary, the mother of Jesus. As she began to research Mary she realized that there were hundreds of women in the scriptures, but very little had been written about them. Excited by all the women she discovered, she began sharing what she learned on her popular blog, Women in the Scriptures (womeninthescriptures.com). Primarily self-taught in the scriptures, Heather is a testament to the truth that becoming a scholar of the gospel is not beyond anyone’s reach, it just takes a inquisitive mind and the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Heather grew up in Idaho but currently lives in Boone, Iowa with her husband, four children, two sheep, a goat and a flock of chickens.
Review:

The New Testament is full of familiar stories and characters, however there is sometimes a lack of emphasis on the women. This book endeavors to change all that. Going person by person, this book takes a look at all the women in the New Testament. Whether much is known or not, the women are looked at and studied as much as possible. Other details about the lives of women is those times is given. If you want to know more about the divine power and strength of women, then look no further.

I love to read about women, particularly those in the scriptures. I feel like many times some of those stories are glossed over a bit. This book goes fairly in depth in to as many women as possible in the New Testament. There were even some women I barely remember being mentioned at all. I love getting to learn about all these strong women. Their stories are amazing. Not to mention the book itself is gorgeous. It's large and full of amazing art. I fell in love with it the minute I saw it, and I want as many people as possible to read about all these amazing women. There are so many great role models for all women in this book. Read this book and become inspired to become more like these women.

I Want to Be Baptized Blog Tour

Welcome to the tour for I Want to Be Baptized by Annalisa Hall and Corey Egbert!

Help your little ones recognize the joy, responsibility, and importance of being baptized. I Want to Be Baptized – from the same author and illustrator who brought you The Holy Ghost Is like a Blanket – depicts what baptism really means for children’s lives by comparing it to objects they remember and relate to. Turn to these heartwarming illustrations and meaningful analogies next time a child asks you about baptism.

About the author:
Annalisa Hall was born in Rochester, MI, to Alvin and Judy Holgerson. She received a merit scholarship to the LDS Business College graduating with honors. She transferred to Brigham Young University in Provo and worked in the Harold B. Lee Library and graduated from BYU with a BA in English. She is the author of Garbage Can Graffiti, published September 2010 in the Friend. She currently lives in Poway, CA, with her husband and three children.

Review:
Baptism is an important part of every LDS child's life. This book shows why baptism is so important by using comparisons to everyday life. Full of colorful illustrations, this book will entertain and teach our young ones about the importance of this sacred ordinance.

I loved this book. I thought it did an amazing job of making comparisons to things that almost any child could understand. The pictures area all bright and interesting. It includes a list of scripture references and Primary song references as well. While the pictures are bright and fun, the words are not too "little kid" for children closer to 8. It's a beautiful book that will really help show why baptism is so important for all of us.

Diary of Two Mad Black Mormons Blog Tour

Welcome to the blog tour for Diary of Two Mad Black Mormons by Zandra Vanes and Tamu Smith!

You’ve read the title, and now you’re scratching your head, wondering if this book is for real, right?

It is. Yes, the authors are bona fide Mormons. And hilarious, too! They call themselves Sistas in Zion.

Did we mention they’ve got enough faith to move mountains? Well, they haven’t moved any mountains just yet, but that’s not stopping them from keeping right on praying and believing and knowing that the gospel of Jesus Christ is worth it.

Their unique perspective on their own diary entries will have you laughing one minute and exclaiming “Amen!” the next. They talk about personal experiences and lessons they’ve learned about relationships, sisterhood, standing up for what you believe, embracing diversity, and dealing with adversity—what being a Christian is all about.

The Sistas’ humorous and poignant outlook on life will strengthen your faith and remind you of the joy to be found in living a Christ-centered life. You’ll soon realize that the authors aren't mad-mad—they’re crazy-mad, funny, and inspiring!

 ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Zandra Vranes and Tamu Smith are popular multimedia personalities and the authors of the online blog -SISTASinZION.com. Zandra (Sista Laurel) and Tamu (Sista Beehive) also host a weekly online radio program, Sistas in Zion Radio. Their media identities, which focus on humorous aspects of faith and Mormon culture, seek to uplift, inspire, bridge religious divides, and create healthy dialogue.

Zandra and Tamu are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter—day Saints. They enjoy the fact that their Christian values and their work coincide.

Their lives are blessed by amazing family and friends. Zandra is thankful for her boo, the love of her life. Tamu enjoys spending time with her husband of twenty years and their six wonderful kids.

Review:

As real live "Sistas" in Zion, Sista Beehive (Tamu Smith) and Sista Laurel (Zandra Vranes) have been using their experiences to teach and entertain. Through as series of short tales written jointly and longer diary entries written seperately, the Sistas use humor to back up their knowledge and faith. They live their beliefs on their sleeves, and they aren't afraid to share everything they've learned (good and bad) with everyone.

I'm not sure love can encompass  how much I enjoyed this book. These two women are smart, funny, and very faithful. They are able to take everyday experiences and less frequent happenings in their lives and turn them into lessons that everyone can use. They don't shy away from any issues. The Sistas are even willing to call out their own errors in order to help teach valuable lessons. It takes a lot of bravery to do that I think. They also managed to bring up a lot of really good points. I found many things that I felt like I could work on, and the ideas presented were relatable to me.

I really loved the Sistas ability to make me feel welcome and a part of their lives. This just really draws you in, and you almost feel like you're just chatting with your best friends about anything and everything. I loved their unflinching look at how their faith has been shaped by so many things in their lives including their race. Let's face it, there are a lot of different scenarios the Sistas had to deal with as opposed to your average (ie white) Mormon. I hope that as people read these experiences, they are able to learn lessons to apply in their own lives as well. I did laugh a little at the "translations" of some of the words that were used, because I was unsure why they needed to be put it. It was pretty standard slang to me, but talking to my husband and mom I guess I see what the target audience for that was. Read this book. It is so worth your time. This doesn't just go for Mormons either; this was written in a way that anyone can understand and find lessons in. This was a fantastic book!

Review: Off Balance by Dominique Moceanu

Title:Off Balance
Author:Dominique Moceanu with Paul & Terri Williams
Publisher:Simon & Schuster
Imprint:Touchstone
Pub. Date:10/16/2007
ISBN:1451608659 (ISBN13: 9781451608656)
Pages:256

AT FOURTEEN YEARS OLD, Dominique Moceanu was the youngest member of the 1996 U.S. Women's Olympic Gymnastics team, the first and only American women's team to take gold at the Olympics. Her pixyish appearance and ferocious competitive drive quickly earned her the status of media darling. But behind the fame, the flawless floor routines, and the million-dollar smile, her life was a series of challenges and hardships.

Off Balance vividly delineates each of the dominating characters who contributed to Moceanu's rise to the top, from her stubborn father and long-suffering mother to her mercurial coach, Bela Karolyi. Here, Moceanu finally shares the haunting stories of competition, her years of hiding injuries and pain out of fear of retribution from her coaches, and how she hit rock bottom after a public battle with her parents.

But medals, murder plots, drugs, and daring escapes aside (all of which figure into Moceanu's incredible journey), the most unique aspect of her life is the family secret that Moceanu discovers, opening a new and unexpected chapter in her adult life. A mysterious letter from a stranger reveals that she has a second sister-born with a physical disability and given away at birth-who has nonetheless followed in Moceanu's footsteps in an astonishing way.

A multilayered memoir that transcends the world of sports, Off Balance will touch anyone who has ever dared to dream of a better life.

Review:

Dominique Moceanu was born to be a gymnast. Her parents were immigrants from Romania, and they were willing to give up anything for her dream. As Dominique's natural talents quickly moved her up the gymnastics ranks, her parents moved her across the country trying to make Dominque the best. While she had great successes, she also had great lows. Dominque soon found herself among adults who were not looking out for her best interests. When she suddenly receives a mysterious letter in the mail, her life is turned even more upside down. It may take a while, but Dominque is determined to live life on her terms, no matter what.

I'm a pretty big gymnastics fan, and I remember the 1996 Olympics fairly clearly. Dominique Moceanu was one of my favorites at that games, and I was sad that she didn't get more medals. It wasn't until much later that I heard stories about what the situation was like behind the scenes. I was mesmerized by Bela Karolyi and his big personality. I didn't realize that was all an act for the camera. Behind the scenes he was often cruel to the gymnasts and strict obedience was enforced. While results were sometimes seen in the medals and good showings at big events, more often then not the gymnasts were injured, hungry, and run-down. Dominque suffered from the same system, but it didn't change her outlook on life permanently.  While she did suffer through many dark days, she managed to find balance and a way to end her gymnastics career (and live her life) the way she chose. It was quite inspiring.

All of this is wrapped in a second even more unbelievable story. After getting a letter in the mail, Dominique is in for the shock of her life. Her parents had a long-kept secret, a third daughter that they gave away for adoption soon after birth due to her physical disabilities. Naturally this comes as quite a shock, but Dominique's new found balance in life helps her deal with that as well. I found this book very interesting as it confirmed some of the things I had heard and gave new perspectives on others. At times I wish that Dominque had gone a little more in-depth as to things that happened, but I supposed it would have been very difficult to relive some of the horrible times in her life. Dominque has come out as a strong voice for change in the way our gymnastic athletes are treated, and I applaud her in this cause. This book was a great example of not only working through some hard parts of life but also truly rising above and living life on your own terms. Great read.
